Of course not.
But those kinds of trips and protests are very common in Germany. It's a ritual, sort of.
Only, it doesn't happen very often that a branch in a remote country is closed, with jobs being transferred to Germany and the affected staff travels to Germany.
It's mostly about factory-closures in Germany and jobs being transferred to remote countries...

It's a 6hour trip, one way.
Understandable, but nevertheless a rather emotional endeavour. The CEO and his cronies sit in the aircondition HQ high above the crowd. If things below get critical, the CEO will give a call to the police chief to send some more forces. But the top brass at such companies is NOT to reconsider corporate decisions

Re: Merck Serono layoffs - up to 900 redundancies in Geneva

Merck may not change their mind about the closing of Geneva, but they could provide proper conditions for the people who have provided them with their nice dividends to transition to their next job without losing their houses or being in financial peril. The point of going to Darmstadt is also to support the colleagues who will also be receiving their announcement of the cuts that will affect them. Merck employees were told to work according to certain values, and now the employees are asking the company to treat them according to those same values....

Don't they believe that they already DID provide "proper conditions" ?
Don't they know that many lose their house as a result ?
Don't they know that many land in fin. peril as a result ?

Here's a thought. If they dont care about the people that generated their dividends, then do they care about the patients that pay for their medications?

NO, but they care about
A) whomever pays their stuff
B) for Darmstadt
C) they do not care about Geneva

Alea iacta est. They're closing shop in Geneva. Sorry for those of you affected.

Re: Merck Serono layoffs - up to 900 redundancies in Geneva

Anyone knows why the information site ms-employees.org is unavailable?

This was a site maintained by employee representatives. Is it being hacked by Merck management?

And at the same time the site is heavily protected by private bodyguards...

Is war coming to CH???

Workers won't have the opportunity to demonstrate their opinions about the announcement, at least not on company property. In the wake of last week's strike, the company issued a directive prohibiting protests on company property.

And they take pictures of the employees daring to demonstrate (which is a constitutional right)...

Good luck to all employees and fight fight fight

Re: Merck Serono layoffs - up to 900 redundancies in Geneva

It is fairly obvious that Merck when purchasing Serono simply wanted to capture the company and move anything of value to Darmstadt. They never even considered to keep anything in Geneva. Except one or two minor facilities in Vaud

The "minor" facility in Vaud, Fenil to be precise has just cost them over Chf 500 mio, hardly minor !

If so, they simply A) wanted to have the HQ functions centralized in Darmstadt and B) wanted to get out of Geneva downtown. But if so, want to have a foothold in the region also in future.

And so, a few questions
> when will the production in the Geneva sites stop ?
> was anything transferred from Geneva to Fenil ?
> has anybody at M-S said anything what they intend to do with
the premises/buidings in Geneva ?
> how many people will in reality move from Geneva to Darmstadt ?
