The article claims that Michele Bachmann "automatically" acquired Swiss citizenship when her husband did. Surely that would be a decision made by an individual, not forced upon one automatically?

Anyway, I can't see her going too far in Swiss politics until she learns to spell her first name correctly.

As she got it through marriage from her husband of swiss descent, I thought facilitated naturalisation would apply, but it appears from the article that she just got it automatically. Can't imagine what her 'close ties to switzerland' are, or did special treatment apply?

Hope she learns to appreciate being a citizen of a country with mandatory health insurance, strong environmental protections, liberal drug laws, legal assisted suicide, permit requirements for gun purchases....

Switzerland is pretty small though. I think of it as an advantage

In my experience most Americans and American news outlets do mean "European" as a geographical reference, not necessarily as a part of the EU

Geographical for sure. Switzerland has been a part of Europe
for a very, very long time before the European Union.
