Some good news for the Swiss pharma job market, but it will be awhile before actual numbers are revealed.

Not many, really. Most of the site functions were closed down last year anyway, leaving fewer than 100 employees in the R&D organisation there. Of these, around 30 will be relocated to a new facility on the East coast.

Remaining manufacturing there will more likely move to Penzburg than to Basel.

So has Roche overstated the number of R&D job cuts? If there are fewer than 100 people in R&D is there an advantage to claiming a 1000 positions are being cut?

Pretty sure Roche hasn't overstated things. The 1000 job losses are for the whole site, not only the R&D bods. Looks like the news report you linked has simply phrased it poorly, and even then it's only the headline that explicitly states that, and headlines are often written by someone other than the reporter.
