Smoking ban in Graubunden

Whilst the main topic of interest for most people today was the vote on capping flights at Zurich airport (which was rejected), it should also be noted that Graubunden and Appenzell have voted to impose a ban on smoking in public places, as of March and January respectively.

Just thought I'd post this here in case people didn't read the whole article :-)

Didn't Basel Stadt vote such a regulation down a year or two ago? I seem to remember seeing something in the Swiss press about it.

Won't take long for it to spread - it went down massively well in England and I must say, I miss going out and not coming home smelling like an ashtray!!!

Ah man, I wish they would do this already in Zürich, my winter coat always smells like a bloody ashtray whenever I go out. It's about time that non smokers don't have to put up with the stink of cigarettes whenever you go to a pub or any other public place.

Too right. I was forced to go into the Gräbli bar on Saturday. My friend wouldn't believe that the shiny brown "paintwork" was tar over white paint until I managed to wipe some off the wall, revealing the white underneath.

Why doesn't someone post something useful like advice on where to go to give up smoking in Switzerland instead of the constant whining?

Re: Smoking ban in Graubunden

Hi,

I don't know what is wrong with being happy about the votes at the weekend ? I had not seen the news and I did not even know there were votes going on. I felt that if the inner schweiz can take this decision then it can only be a matter of time before this change becomes universal in Switzerland.

As you said it will not stop anyone smoking who wants to but it will just mean that people who do not want to be constantly exposed to smoke will have more choice of where they can eat, socialise and work.

I am not whining just celebrating....I have waited a long time to see this change in Switzerland. I still remember the bad old days of smoking on aircraft and I remember swiss airlines were some of the last airlines to go smoke free.

Don't complain that some people are happy about what is going on.

Martin

Err, Graubunden and Appenzell??

If I was an ex-smoker then I might be able to help. In the meantime I'll just whine.

You should have refused to go, and left the smokers in peace.

Re: Smoking ban in Graubunden

There are about four or five cigar lounges in Zürich that I occasionally visit. As these venues specifically make clear their purpose, the implementation of a compulsory ban represents for me a travesty.

They could have a similar one for a painting on a floor, for the non-smokers, looking down on the rest of us from up high, on a cloud or somesuch.

Grrrrr.

The "eat smoke free" link was posted in another thread and the student bar of the ETH is smoke free but sadly only open until ten, because some neighbour was getting upset by the noise.

If you're not after booze as such but cakes and suchlike, Cakefriends near Bellevue is non-smoking. Try their lemon cake. And the chocolate. Heaven! Café Schwarzenbach is also without fumes and you can get hot scones with clotted cream and jam. If you're lucky you may also get a seat, it is frequently jam-packed, depending on the hours.

Re: Smoking ban in Graubunden

Dave and cyrus, Cata1st, it is not that simple as avoiding the smokers places.

I go dancing several times a week in Zürich, and invariably come back home stinking at tobacco. Same on the restaurants.

I think the smokers have a right to smoke, i respect your right to do it even knowing it is bad for your health, but they must respect a shared resource as the air.

If it was possible for you smokers that you could carry some plastic bag and blow your smoke there inside that could be a solution, but not. the smoke you produce poison all our air and affect our health.

Imagine this. Someone likes to fart, it is a pleasure for him. it feels good for him to free his guts from it, so why he can't go to the restaurants and discos and just fart away ? Out of respect for the others off course. If he wants to fart he could go to the toilet and fart inside.

Well as a non smoker I feel the same when someone is blowing his smoke on me as if he was farting at my side.

Sure you have rights as an smoker, but we should also have our rights.
