I often wonder how this whole upload grey area works with Torrents. As soon as you start downloading a torrent, you start sharing the bits of the torrent you have, does this count as uploading? Or is it only if you seed the file?
As far as I understand it and as far as the above mentioned document is concerned, yes, as soon as you start downloading the file it shares it and this is considered uploading. They recommend that you disable this feature in the app you are using to download with. Seeding the file is uploading and a no-no....

Re: Prosecution for P2P users - coming soon!

but if everyone would stop uploading there would be nothing left to download, no?

and i always feel guilty moving the files straightaway as i feel like if they shared i should share with others...but i guess i should stop doing this?

There is some software called "Peer Guardian" that blocks IP addresses known to be from the gov'mint etc.

My mate mentioned something about it.

Re: Prosecution for P2P users - coming soon!

Use Tor and Privoxy for basic web coms and run P2P torrents over the I2P network. Using Firefox you can click Tor on and off to use Hushmail and the like.

Amazing to think that handing out the above information will soon be illegal.

Does this explain why I can no longer get Limewire to work on Cablecom?

Re: Prosecution for P2P users - coming soon!

Seems like not much is changing.

Downloading for personal use remains legal - uploading remains a no no.

Bypassing copy protection will become illegal though.

Didn't you mean whether "your mate" is doing any criminal offense ... and surely your mate may find police knocking his door ? Eh?

"My mate" also wants to know the same ... he can't be too careful in Switzerland...

BTW, "my mate" also confided that utorrent is the best in windows, could "your mate" try running it like this?

Unfortunate for him, my mate runs a Mac. He is considering getting a linux box just for this purpose. Wait a minute, wouldn't a unix client work on my mate's mac?

Re: Prosecution for P2P users - coming soon!

Limewire has been taken down. A legal notice popped up when I launched it two days ago. Then yesterday I got an email from Limewire saying that a new version is available for download. Anyone got any better info on this?

www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&source=hp&biw=800&bih=354&q=limewire+legal+ notice&aq=0z&aqi=g-z1g9&aql=&oq=limewire+legal&gs_rfai=&fp=2681f0dd6d 9da3e6

A Limewire spokesman said, "Limewire is now out of the file sharing business."

Re: Prosecution for P2P users - coming soon!

Does anyone still use limewire? Last time I looked was a fair few years ago and even then it was full of junk. I thought everyone had moved on since then.

Re: Prosecution for P2P users - coming soon!

i still use it - always have good luck finding recent episodes and movies. so does this mean that even if i see a file that i want (just ran a search and stuff was still showing up) i should avoid downloading it?

According to the lawyer who's sitting next to me: yes, that's uploading. Uploading a part of a copyrighted file is treated the same as uploading all of it.
