Yep, 6403 Küssnacht am Rigi (SZ) is the little town famous for the Klausjagen festival.

Maybe not everybody wants to live in the Wolleraus of this world.

Some of these so-called imporished communities are actually good places to live. Rents are low and if you can get on with the community, you can have a good time there, especially if you like international food and culture. Not everybody who lives in a poor community is themselves poor. In fact there is a lot of gentrification going on in Brussels precisely because of better off people discovering the positive sides of some of the poorer neighbourhoods.
My Belgian contact agrees that if low rent is what someone is looking for, the slum areas of Brussels can't be beat; she said as low as €200-300 per month. Her other comments:

Saint-Josse: "Haven't been robbed since 2007, which was the last time I was there."
Molenbeek: "Dreadful, worse than the old Sabena"
Saint-Gilles: "The place to go for a genuine Kalashnikov or a fake passport"
Schaerbeek: "Better than its reputation"
Anderlecht: "The football club or the town?"

I guess how your neighbours treat you depends in part on how you treat and respect them.

I've lived in some pretty trashy and tough areas myself and never had any serious trouble.

I suppose you could say the same for Shakira style dancing, but it is liberating to rhythmically unlock your coccyx, you should try it ( OMG I just spelt rhythmically correctly first time!)

Who would not be jealous of Tina Turner? But no, Marton I'm not jealous of her Toyboys I prefer older men, I always end up hanging out with younger ones for some reason.

I am a hypocrite anyway. I feel a sense of loyalty to the US, but really I owe the UK a debt- I didn't pay a penny for my degree. I should have remained and helped build a great education system.

8700 Küsnacht.

Actually both of you are right

We have:

- 6403 Küssnacht a. R. in Kanton Schwyz and
- 8700 Küsnacht in Kanton Zürich

The easiest way to remember which is which is to check which Kanton has two S's in its spelling => 2 S in Schwyz so 2 S in Küssnacht SZ

When mailing a letter always use this format:

- 6403 Küssnacht SZ or 6403 Küssnacht am Rigi
- 8700 Küsnacht ZH

Another example:

- 5200 Brugg AG (w/o Umlaut)
- 2555 Brügg BE (with Umlaut)

Among the most confusing are Au, Buch, Buchs, Büren, Chavannes, Granges, Münster, Niederwil, Oberwil, Ried, Wangen, Wil, townships

5105 Au AG
9434 Au SG
8376 Au TG
8804 Au ZH

... just to name a few...

Ummmm ... yeah.

Tina Turner lives in Küsnacht, so Küssnacht (am oder ohne Rigi -- officially it's ohne) is incorrect. So only Meloncollie was correct.

Thanks for the tip about matching town and canton, but I fear I may spend so much time looking for that elusive second 's' in 'Schwyz' that I won't remember which spelling goes where.

I love the music she made in the US- not too down with the ring-ding Swiss stuff. I dance like her- especially to Nutbush! I was at her first comeback tour- when we had to all bunch together to make it seems like the there was a full crowd for a promo video. I love American Soul music- I' a big Tamla and Northern Soul fan. Just seems to me that she sold out. There is so much that she could do for charities here in the US, instead she's doing Swiss ads, trying to sell herself as Echte Schweiz at heart? Does she really need the money- or Swiss acceptance?
Celebrities - they're all doing that. Of course they don't really need money, neither acceptance, but it's hard to let go of their life under the spotlight. And let's be honest, it's amusing to see her presenting herself as a Swiss at heart. Flattering for some, but comical for others.

Blick has a video interview with Tina Turner, in English with German subtitles:

Re: Tina Turner to become Swiss

In the Blick interview she states that she informed the Swiss authorities that she was learning German, and follows it up with some very low-level German phrases. What's the chance that the government required any language certificate from her or interviewed her in German as would at least theoretically have been the case especially if she were a non-celebrity or not exceptionally wealthy? Good for her regardless that she became Swiss. But notice that the interviewer refers to her as a Swiss passport holder and not Swiss?

This confirms my suspicions that she was not quite as fluent in German as Wolli said she was. I figure that the Swiss authorities are cutting her some slack because of both the money and prestige she is bringing to Switzerland. In fairness to her, Ms. Turner says she is trying to learn German and accepts that German is the language of the canton to which she is now a member.

To put it more simply, all Tina Turner has to do to prove that she has value to bring to Switzerland is open up her wallet. For most foreigners who are not in her tax bracket, proving their value to Switzerland means forming ties, friendships, and relationships with Swiss in their local canton---and this means learning the local language before getting a red passport.

Maybe I am missing something, but I watched the videos linked here and she doesn't talk German that much in the videos, so it is difficult for me to judge her proficiency in this language. What she says, however, does not sound that bad. Obviously she has an U.S. accent and some of the words don't fit, but that was to be expected. I have still to meet someone who came to Switzerland as a non-German speaking adult and I can't at least guess that German is not their mother tongue.

I know some naturalized Swiss (famous and not famous) who speak worse German than what we could hear in this very limited sample (And no not Romands or Walliser ).

The whole discussion puzzles me a bit. The tone of it leaves a strange aftertaste.

^^ IMHO someone living in a German-speaking place for about twenty years and in a long-term relationship with a German for even longer than that (the case when she applied for citizenship) had to have practically tried not to pick up the language, if her ability is the level hers seems to be.

It might just be that in the circles with which Tina Turner moves in Switzerland, she doesn't really need to know a language other than English. It also might be that she didn't plan her renunciation of American citizenship that long before she made it official. If, like other American expatriates on this forum, she had planned to become Swiss but knew she wouldn't be eligible for several years, I think she would have made a more concerted effort to learn German. (Of course, she might also have thought--until recently--that she would not have to learn German to become Swiss.)

I'm willing to cut her some slack. If the Swiss have no problems with their new countrywoman, why should I?
