her German is reportedly quite good but she chooses to speak English in public:

It looks like the German is being retranslated to her in English via an earpiece, that's why she puts her finger near her ear and she takes a few seconds to formulate her response.

The mayor of her hometown in Tennessee is shocked. As he expected some support from her from some local investments. I suppose she will still support him, but will export stuff from Switzerland as she that way now can
A) deduct the VAT from her VAT bill
B) deduct the total as "caritative activity" from her tax declaration
Yes, wouldn't it be better if people would freely donate their surplus funds for good charities.
What I admire Tina for doing is in her own very small way cutting off some funding of the world's largest military machine ever that has seemingly gone crazy in its desire to bring global death and destruction. That said naturally I know not what Tina's actual motives were.

In order to renounce US citizenship, even though she has been living in Europe for decades, she will have to pay a hefty 'Exit Tax' to the US which I think is 15% of all her assets.

Why? Does every American have to do that?

Only if you have more than $2M or so.
I understand the exit tax applies even to non-US citizens who want to renounce their Green Card. I don't know what the criteria are with regard to minimum assets or tax liability. It's an unbelievable system, really.

You can find out more at www.renunciationguide.com. They have a section on tax situation for citizens and green card holders.

Exactly, she doesn't pause and touch her ear when the presenter asks her a question in English (like in Swiss German TV). And some of these questions are so basic an A2 or B1 level speaker could understand and answer (heck I could have probably answered a lot of those questions when I was in my 2nd year of high school German, and that was almost 2 decades ago when I lived in the US).

Thing is, if her German was good enough to become Swiss, why doesn't she speak in German then, considering that Switzerland is her "home"?

I have the feeling some of the Swiss on this board like Wollishofener are probably concerned the whole "you need to be 'integrated' in order to be naturalised" argument will be full of holes if the Kantonal and Federal authorities give their green lights.

I'm sorry guys, but if you don't speak the national language, you are far from being integrated no matter which country you live in.

Did somebody notice that in the Blick article, it says clearly that she is learning German, not that she speaks it? In the mouth of her "speaker":

Sie schätze die Sauberkeit, die Ordnung, die vier Jahreszeiten in der Schweiz, liebe Land und Leute, so die Sprecherin über den Superstar, der fleissig Deutsch lernt.

Hope somebody asks some pointed questions about what was the criteria used to determine integration for her.

"Lots of tax revenue for years and years, and in the future as well" would be sad.

A) There is NO national language here, there are FOUR national languages.

B) My wife is Swiss-German, but she really doesn't speak a word of it. My kids are somewhat better with German, but not with Swiss-German.

C) The only language other than English that I am truly fluent is is French, though I have never lived in Romandie.

So, what's your point?

Tom

Re: Tina Turner to become Swiss

Tina Turner never learned to speak German, before. Only lately.

That`s why, a few years ago when she asked for citizenship she was turned down, because Kuesnacht where she lives has very strict rules about language requirements. She has now learned German. Just like all us foreigners have had to do.

Yes, but even had I not, the lingo here is Italian, and NOT German!

Oh, and my Italian sucked at that point, good thing the cop was my neighbor.

Look. This is Tina Turner and not John Smith. All she has to do is hum a few bars to Polo Hofer and she's got it made.

All I got was a letter from Bern with legal mumbo jumbo on it. Never met a person at any stage. Just paid my Fr. 300.- or so and used the scrap of paper to apply for an ID card.

Yeah, but you guys got your citizenships before women were even allowed to vote in Switzerland. Things have changed.

Kuesnacht is the key word here. Kuesnacht has VERY strict laws about language requirements. Their discussions with potential Swiss citizens in their district are conducted in the local language. If you do not speak it - you cannot hope to be accepted. Doesn`t matter how much money one has, the Swiss Passport cannot be "bought".

Nope, '97 (after getting married in NY in '88, and remarried in '11 50m from here).

Meanwhile, I' have to turn down the music, the neighbors can only stand so many times of hearing "Baila (Sexy Thing)".

well, I suppose at least the debate about Tina Turner's German proficiency has been a welcome respite from the usual debates about people whose German and/or Swiss German is perfectly fine but who we still don't want in the country for one reason or another.
