CT, we have a winner!

Used to go skiing after school, 20 minutes away (but then I was 40km from the coast).

When I moved down south (Norwalk, Westport), 1km to the coast, still less than an hour to ski.

oh, for crying out loud, if you read her actual post on Facebook she was simply looking for advice as to how to navigate the queue at the skilifts, which is often a hurdle for American skiers in Switzerland.

She should try a Migros queue on a Saturday morning; that would make her wish she were at a skilift.

Re: Amb. Suzi lays an egg!

The Blick continues to apply pressure to Amb. Suzi. In a hard-hitting article today, Blick quotes Swiss ski lift managers as saying that waiting for ski lifts in Switzerland is organized differently than in the US and that Suzi is insensitive to cultural differences. Peter Kraft, a ski resort tester and CEO of skiresort.de, said: "She is simply not used to the way it's done. This is a cultural matter."

http://www.blick.ch/news/schweiz/ber...id3384869.html

In fairness to the awkward, amateur US ambassador, we need to recognize that she apparently grew up in a cocoon. Switzerland must be very strange to Amb. Suzi. Much of the US, and even Seattle, would be strange to her too.

"Hard-hitting"? Are you reading the same article?

Also, nobody is quoted in that article as "saying... that Suzi is insensitive to cultural differences." That's your interpolation.

MennoFloyd, this is the second time I've called you out in two days for either translating incorrectly or just plain making stuff up. Do you also write for the Mail by any chance?

Quite right. He should have said '. . . and implying that Suzi is insensitive to cultural differences, or just plain ignorant.'

Peter Krafft was displaying a remarkable talent for diplomatic 'speak', unlike of course Suzi L., and a direct translation, for an English speaking audience benefits from some interpretation.

Re: Amb. Suzi lays an egg!

Tages-Anzeiger is now carrying the story:

"US Ambassador complains about "chaos" at Swiss ski lifts - a giant mob presses towards the gondolas or chairlifts - elbows included. The highest US envoy was rather astonished at this everyday picture in the Swiss Alps"

http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/leben/ra...story/27125362

A good thing about Suzi's declining popularity is that it is still possible to get a seat at the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce "Welcome Luncheon" for her on January 15. The luncheon for Lloyd Blankfein, Goldman Sachs CEO, on January 21, on the other hand, is booked out:

Re: Amb. Suzi lays an egg!

Took me awhile to realise who "Amb. Suzi is". I couldn't even tell you who the UK ambassador to CH is, but my friends daughter goes to school with the Finnish ambassador's child. Does that count? (I don't know her name either).

Anyway, I'm not surprised there's chaos at Swiss ski lifts; there's no frigging snow and most runs/resorts are closed anyway.

I think that she usually uses the "V.I.P." lifts in the U.S.A. so never mixed with the hoi-polloi or realised that other people were on the slopes and pushing to get to the front of the queue. Where are her bodyguards? Don`t tell me.

"Sogar die Bergbahn-Direktoren geben ihr jetzt teilweise Recht. 'Die Schweizer stehen vielleicht etwas weniger kultiviert als Amerikaner oder Engländer in einer Warteschlange', sagt Silvio Schmid, Präsident der Bündner Bergbahnen, heute zur Südostschweiz. Von 'Chaos' will Silvio Schmid jedoch nichts wissen. Unsere Schlangen seien lediglich 'anderes organisiert' als die der Amis."

well, apparently the Director of the Bündner Bergbahnen agrees with her, presuming of course that you consider Graubünden part of the "real world".

well, for starters, the people at Blick don't English good at all. here is what the infamous holder-of-an-utterly-meaningless-post actually wrote:

"Ich habe eine frage: I'm trying to understand the chaos in the lift lines at Swiss ski resorts. Yesterday, we enjoyed a great day at Adelboden (you can see my daughter with the clear skies and the moon coming up over the mountains) - but I was so puzzled by the scrum heading to the lift (and the inefficiency in terms of how many people were on each lift). Is there an optimal way to navigate the line? Are there specific Swiss resorts doing it best? Thank you for your wisdom!"

fyi, her question is really no different than the questions I asked my Swiss colleagues about the way Swiss drivers are taught to merge when faced with construction or a lane closure on the motorway (Swiss drivers stay in their lanes until the last possible moment to merge, even when they are alerted 2km in advance of a lane closure, which would get you killed in America and many European countries). granted, she may not have asked her question in a perfectly diplomatic manner, but lack of diplomacy in interpersonal questions regarding structure and order should come as no particular culture shock to the Swiss.

even at the humble and modest ski joints frequented by us common folk in the midwestern US, it is custom to wait single-file (except for your partner or skiing companions) and to refrain from boarding the lift with someone you don't know unless you ask first. bearing in mind, of course, that if you join the lift with someone you don't know you will still be forced to listen to them talk about their marriage, divorce, job, kids, grandkids, car, hobbies, sexual preferences, political beliefs, etc. all the way up to the top.

we cue for the skilift the same way the Swiss merge on to the motorway, and we merge on to the motorway the same way the Swiss queue for the skilift.

Hmmm, in CA, NV, ID, CO and UT, we have lines that you can get into if you are a single/double/triple. No asking, you just move with your line and you get paired with people whether you like it or not. The operators are trying to fill ALL of the seats if things are crowded.

It works pretty well now. I remember in the 70's on a crowded day in Tahoe before a good system was put in place... sometimes it DID get a bit disorganized. But Americans are pretty good with queues. Pretty much every resort I have been to in Europe (CH/FR/AU/IT) has been more of a free for all. SE and NO are pretty civilized...

I don't know enough yet about Amb. Suzi to form an opinion, but I think this latest "story" is really a non-story.
