Shouldn't it be a diplomats bread and butter to consider how any given word might be perceived? While she may have a point, it's common knowledge that how you phrase a message often determines its success.
Sure. But it took me six years to grasp that particular nuance of register - it's simply not something that comes up that often in conversation. So I am not surprised that a recently-appointed ambassador did not know it either.

I am more disappointed (although perhaps I shouldn't be surprised, given that we're talking about the Blick) that journalists reporting the story either did not know or care to indicate for their readers the difference.

she directed a question, in English, presumably to people who read English.

P.S. at least she didn't complain that Swiss skilifts were a "puff".

2) Can someone explain what's so different with lines in the States? I guess you could force people sitting together so you don't have empty chairs, or make lanes longer that lead to the card readers so it's a little more orderly, but what was she expecting anyway? Cues like the trains in Japan?

Last time I caugt a train in the USA I was walked onto the platform by a hostess who told me precisely where to stand while waiting for the train. And although I had a "reservation", neither the reservation nor the ticket indicated my car number or seat number. The ticket inspector showed my my seat. It took ages until everybody was seated and the train could move on. But I guess to Americans service is more important than efficiency.

In that respect the Japanese system is the same only that it cuts out the middle man and is thus faster and more cost effective.

Perhaps, but one might have a better opinion of her job performance were she to get information of the disastrous effects of FATCA rather than ski-lift lines on public holidays.

Tom

She is NOT interested in FATCA but in skiing

Not content with destroying the Swiss financial center and turning Americans in Switzerland into second-class citizens, Amb. Suzi has lashed out at skiing and winter sports in Switzerland on her Facebook page. Scrapping any sense of diplomacy, she called Swiss ski lift conditions inefficient and chaotic.
I see that this is the second time you have started a thread about the Ambassador.

Just for the record could you confirm whether you are:
(a) a spurned admirer of Suzi;
(b) the Ambassador herself, cunningly trying to raise her profile in the expat community;
(c) a member of the Tea Party;
(d) just a bit obsessed; or
(e) all of the above?

I think she should go tobogganing. This is something which is being banned in many cities in the US.

Details such as connotations require an very high level of a language, something beyond the capabilities of many (most?) non-english/american readers (see #73 by MathNut).

Are you going to sue amb. Suzi over the outrage of using the word "chaotic" in reference to something Swiss?
No, I mean, don't get me wrong here, the last thing I want is to insult or offend Swiss people and Switzerland, of course nothing can be chaotic in Switzerland, just saying.

Well I am as English as you can get and I don`t see chaos on the queues. Everybody is going in the same direction and wants to go to the same place.
Mind you I have never skied anywhere else much. I see it as "actives Anstehen"
as someone wrote in the BaZ last week.

I agree with this entirely, which is why I hate translations in the media and think it's more than a little silly to get upset about the use of a perfectly harmless word in English by a native English speaker just because that word has somewhat less harmless meaning when translated poorly into German.

It all looks like good clean fun to me. Ambassadors and messengers in ancient Greece, who were associated with bad news, had an even harder time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_the_messenger

Not long ago we had some Americans upset on this forum about the German use of the word "Neger" and demading it be banned for being so offensive without relaizing how absurd their demands were.

What we are now observing is surely just a reversal of roles? Nobody is totally above making a total fool of themselves.
