Okay, I guess if you have nothing better to do with 35K...

Re: Swiss Company Charges $35K for Unique Baby Names

From the article

Quote:
The company currently has a few naming requests since their launch this month. Hauser says the families have requested their identities remain private.
Which means they haven't, it didn't happen, it's a non story.

The company is a marketing agency who, amongst other things, find/create unique names for companies and products, a valuable commercial service. They are a marketing company so know how to manipulate the press into writing stories for their clients, or in this case, themselves to get more recognition for their brand.

I'm always surprised how the press fall for tricks like this, but they always do.

They should have worked harder on their own name....

It fails on one important point when naming your international company... pronouncibily.

The press actually is grateful that someone does the creative part for them.
I'm surprised the readers fall for tricks like this :-)

That was my first thought, and they've certainly received some nice, free publicity from GMA - which has a pretty large following in the U.S.

I don't get the whole unique name thing, TBH. Sure, we don't all want to be John Johnson or whatever, but there's nothing wrong with traditional names with normal spellings. The name doesn't make the person.

It doesn't make the person, but it does influence how people perceive and treat them which can play quite a role in how they develop.

Of course in a perfect noble world, everyone would be free to direct their life as they see fit, unfortunately that is not the case.

Small little case in point: You 'don't get whole unique thing' ---this is already a bias and a prejudgment which can possible be projected on the individual. -Not saying you will (we all know 3wishes is a stand up character!), but just using an example about how subtle subconscious aspects can affect others.

As someone that grew up with a semi-unique name, I faced that bias and prejudgment you're talking about. I also grew up with my name constantly being misspelled, mispronounced, etc. My driver's license was misspelled for years because the authorities wouldn't fix it.

I should clarify a bit. Unique is one thing. Wacko/attention-grabbing/look- at-what-a-creative-parent-I-am is another. This whole $35K for a name (if it's even legit) is 100% in the attention-grabbing parent category, imo.

The parents of these kids should be sterilised. They just lower the gene pool massively.

What are they thinking of when they try register their kids!? Some of the (none of the above) name might be "cutesy-wootsy" when they're babies and toddlers, but you have to think what happens when they apply for uni, or even worse for them, when start applying for jobs. They'd never get through a paper sift at the first round.

Poor kids.

I read about Abcde recently (pronounced "Absidee") recently actually thought it was a pretty name! My kids have non-unusual names though. I hated choosing baby names! Such a responsibility! Happy with our choices though

My favorite name is Penn Jillette's daughter (from Penn & Teller). Her name is Moxy Crimefighter. I never got into the unique name thing. I named my kids Jon & Tom.
