Re: Avoid the Tunnels!!

Being a desk monkey I could work from home most days, but attitudes towards that here in smaller companies seem to be a little backward compared to back home. In my company it's a couple of days a month at most, and only with full line manager discretion.

Back in Blighty anyone with a WFH type position could negotiate upto 3 days a week from home (enshrined in contract), and with that comes a home pack (docking station, laser printer, monitor, peripherals and free broadband + mobile phone) and flexible working.

Re: Avoid the Tunnels!!

I have no doubt I "could" work from home and have done in the past. Even when the commute was short being sat at my desk at home by 0700 did allow me a good headstart on the day. It was also a major bonus when travelling - for example my week could be: Monday 0800-1600 (Zurich office) over to the airport for the late flight to Newark. Then work Tues-Thurs in New York (0800-2000 ) taking the late flight out to Newark on Thursday evening. This gets you back into ZRH around 11am. Going home to work for 1/2 day was a lot easier/more pleasent than going into the office again.

However being in the office means you get facetime with people - it is quicker to get an answer standing at someones desk than via email/lync.

There are times it works well and there are times it doesn't.

Wolli, that's just rubbish. Whilst the technology may support it for many office workers, it is often not particularly practical - and whilst many companies may not publicly say so, they tend not to encourage it. There is also the whole security aspect, which companies rightly or wrongly are still not at ease with.

Re: Avoid the Tunnels!!

While I agree the public transport is good here, I wouldn't say it to be excellent, well, in Basel, at least.

I find it slow. It takes 45 minutes from school to home by tram and 15 minutes with the car, even if there is traffic.

In winter, it is extremely hot in there and in summer too. The heat is to the max and many trams don't have air conditioning nor proper opening windows.

Somewhat disappointed now.
Is that because you have a job that means you can work at home??

And for all of those who can work at home (because they are a small cog/office drone) - what did you put down as your "What do you want to be when you grow up?" ???

(Am I the only one who when they see a train driver thinks - you followed through on your "What do you want to be when you grow up?" ?)

Here goes - using the following link: Route to Gubrist

As you can see the route follows a fairly short path to the Gubrist from both Eastbound and Westbound carriageways - it is this that causes the problem.

Below is an alternative - and even that doesn't really allow as much space as is required. It would push the merge points about 500m further south - ideally I would suggest going back another 500m. This would give 1km of post interchange motorway to merge lanes from 4 to 3 to 2.

I should be more carefull what I ask for in life...

Sorry Wolli, but what you're babbling here is utter nonsense!

How should e.g. a nurse, construction worker, cashier at Coop, etc. work from home?!?

I do most of my work from home but there are many jobs where it's simply not possible.

A) when I had a flat in Adliswil I often took work with me
B) a colleague here regularily takes work to Oberglatt

As a good part of people in Switzerland are Schreibtischtäter
