Avoid the Tunnels!!

I've just now been alerted that the Gubrist Tunnel has a boo boo..
People are being evacuated due to a fire in the tunnel.

Monday there was a serious incident in the Schinznacherfeldtunnel.

Its only Wednesday!

Whats up with traffic this week?!

It's not the traffic - it's the drivers.

No reason to get alarmist. A nice part of roads and of railways in Switzerland is in tunnels

And of the rest a good part is on bridges

Re: Avoid the Tunnels!!

For anyone who uses the Baregg Tunnel, this is part of a test phase until the end of 2015 to save energy and in the evening the lights before the tunnel will be shut off.

Not only is the goal to save energy but also experts think drivers slow down when it is darker. The lights will remain on in the tunnel.

even on a good day the Gubrist is a nightmare because no one can drive.. a country of so many tunnels yet every one seems to panic when they get near one..

though it explains why the traffic was a nightmare into Zurich from Baden tonight

use public transport
How long did it take you to think of that reply??

People drive because, despite the delays, it is quicker, easier, more convienient and more comfortable than taking public transport. There are many routes where the start and end points are not on the same branch.

For example Dubendorf to Basserdorf - a 12minute 7.4km drive - or a minimum 30mins by train (station to station).

"Use public transport" is a Maslow response.

Swings and roundabouts. Zurich to Brig, 3.5 hours by car, 2.25 hours by train.

Only tunnel to avoid is Gubrist. Whoever designed the road layout immediately leading up to that tunnel needs shooting.

Very little they can do about it though - the issue is that the "hill" rises quickly after the Limmat - meaning a tunnel. Therefore the interchange has to have a short merge. The only space they have is the Weidwald - which with a reverse merge IE for all traffic to merge onto the Northbound carriageway to do so South of the interchange - instead of over as is the the case now. A new tunnel (3 lanes) would also increase flow.

Re: Avoid the Tunnels!!

Possible solution would to dig below the tunnel to mirror image the above tunnel, double the amount of lanes. Think it has been done before somehere in Europe.

100% agree with this. I normally take the train from home in Richterswil to my office in Zurich which is right by HB. However, despite having such a good public transport commute, taking the car normally saves me 40% in time on average - even in rush hour.

Not to mention that the earliest train starts too late to get into the office by 5am... Living out where we do, with the schedules we need to keep and the places we need to go, a car is a must. As it is for many folks.

Public transportation is fantastic here, no doubt, especially if you travel around a metro area and keep to a 9-5 schedule. We are very lucky to have it, but it should be remembered that there are still significant gaps in coverage.

The Gubrist Tunnel was finished 1985. Those days they didn't expect such strong development of inhabitants in Switzerland.

In 1985 the CH performance was 40 billion vehicle-km. Nowadays it is about 54. +35%. And up to 115'000 cars drive through the Gubrist per day.

Definitely too many foreigners (+101% since 1985)!

I am dazed and confused now. Where the hell can I pull over to figure this out?

Yeah, they come over here, clogging up our tunnels. Why can't they stay at home and clog up their own tunnels? Every Swiss tunnel should have a limit on the number of foreigners who are allowed to be in it at any one time.

Here goes - using the following link: Route to Gubrist

As you can see the route follows a fairly short path to the Gubrist from both Eastbound and Westbound carriageways - it is this that causes the problem.

Below is an alternative - and even that doesn't really allow as much space as is required. It would push the merge points about 500m further south - ideally I would suggest going back another 500m. This would give 1km of post interchange motorway to merge lanes from 4 to 3 to 2.

Sorry Wolli, but what you're babbling here is utter nonsense!

How should e.g. a nurse, construction worker, cashier at Coop, etc. work from home?!?

I do most of my work from home but there are many jobs where it's simply not possible.
