US Embassy calls the cops

On Saturday a group of six Muslim women, a man and a baby laid flowers on the sidewalk in front of the US Embassy in Bern in honor of the three Muslim students murdered in North Carolina. Six Bern police quickly arrived in three patrol cars to check the identity of these flower-layers. Qaasim Illi of the Islamic Central Committee of Switzerland (IZRS) said that the police were there to intimidate.

Unlike the Muslim flower-bearers, EF readers know to stay away from the US Embassy except for important matters like renouncing US citizenship. Not only is the Bern Embassy the headquarters of CIA European operations - and therefore a good place to avoid - but Amb. Suzi does not like to be disturbed when she is practicing yoga, planning the next trip on her GA or writing scathing comments about skiing in Switzerland.

As of 06:58, the detail of the story seems to be mysteriously unavailable on the 20 Minuten site. Maybe they are having to do a quick spot of self-censorship. No other stories seem to be affected.

Re: US Embassy calls the cops

This is what really happened on Saturday:

Embassy guard: "Hallo, Ambassador Suzi? People are laying blumen on the trottoir. What to do?
Amb. Suzi: What are they laying?

Embassy guard: Blumen.
Amb. Suzi: Bomben?

Embassy guard: Ja, blumen.
Amb. Suzi: Call the police!

Embassy guard: Ja, sofort.

If Mohammed caricatures are OK, this must be accepted as well. The only way to prevent this would be banning IZRS - fortunately the hurdles for that are very high.

I'm not sure that ridiculing a religious figure is the same as sympathizing with one of the worlds most heinous terrorist organization but I'll accept your claim.

Shall we go and lay flowers at their doorstep for all the victims of radical Islam, which they are happy to defend ?

At a flower each it would take fields the size of Holland.

By the way, where does it say the Embassy called the cops? I read the Embassy allowed them to lay the flowers after making arrangements to.

Some deadly film shooting. Even the USA could learn from them.

If whatever they do is punishable then do drag them to court. Otherwise freedom of speach, among other things, applies.

Correct : sympathising with ISIS is not illegal.

However, It does puts them on the list of suspects.

The police handled this case well: checked that the flowers didn't conceal anything dangerous and let them lay them.

This is a stupid non-story. The Embassy did not even call the cops. But glad hear the police are keeping a watch on the Embassy. Great job.

Re: US Embassy calls the cops

Since the U.S. government has dumped on overseas Americans, some of us were thinking to place a brown-log memorial at the Bern Embassy to recognize its behavior. We haven't decided on all details, e.g., should we leave this smelly memorial in a plastic container so as not to unnecessarily fertilize the grass or should we place it on the lawn? If left in a plastic container, Amb. Suzi could later rinse it out and then re-use the container for cookies and other leftovers.

Also, we're not sure if the embassy will call the Bern police thinking that we might be ISIS terrorists, although we don't quite fit that description, but we'll be sure to bring plenty of IDs. Lots of things to consider and decisions to make.

I use to keep some distance to US embassies usually guarded by trigger happy US Marines --- not without good reasons -- and that Police in this area is nervous is well understandable

While I do NOT quite see what a a brown-log Memorial is I would take it easy

I like this idea of a brown-log memorial, but first bronze the turd turning it into a trophy of sorts. Then invite the ambassadors from Eritrea, North Korea and the US to a gala awards banquet for presentation. First year's award should probably go to North Korea since there is no country that treats its citizens abroad worse. The US would have to wait a year before winning and then Eritrea could be awarded the bronzed turd the following year. After reading this article, however, North Korea has to be the first year's winner:

"North Korea has 100,000 labourers working abroad in a ‘state-sponsored slavery’ scheme: rights groups

Tens of thousands of North Koreans work long hours for little or no pay, toiling in Chinese factories or Russian logging camps, digging military tunnels in Burma, building monuments for African dictators, sweating at construction sites in the Middle East and aboard fishing boats off Fiji, according to former workers and human rights researchers.

For decades, North Korea has been accused of sending workers abroad and of confiscating most of their wages. But in the years since Kim Jong Un took over as leader, human rights researchers say, the program has expanded rapidly as international sanctions have squeezed the country’s other sources of foreign currency, like illicit trading in missile parts."

Re: US Embassy calls the cops

I confess to having only read the 20 Min article quickly, but I must have missed the part where the US Embassy called the police. Rather, the article suggests that the police called the US Embassy to confirm that it was ok to permit the flowers to remain but only after the police had conducted the control.

Given the current situation across much of Europe, only an absolute fool would be surprised about being subject to police scrutiny when approaching any western embassy under the circumstances described in the article. The police would have no doubt taken exactly the same action if the flowers had been laid in front of the French or Belgian embassies.

Oh, and it is only a matter of time before IZRS is found to have been funneling monies used in the funding of terrorist activity. There is simply no comparison whatsoever between drawing a cartoon and knowingly financing a "revolution", not to mention openly recruiting jihadists, in another country.
