Roger Köppel - SVP candidate

Well, unless you live under a rock (a very big glacial boulder actually), you'll have heard the news that one of Switzerland's most prominent media personalities, Roger Köppel (Chief Editor and owner of the Weltwoche newspaper), has decided to run for Parliament (Nationalrat) for the SVP in the forthcoming October 2015 elections.

Whilst this isn't groundbreaking as such, the fact that one of Switzerland's most eloquent and well connected men has chosen to transition himself into a parliamentary candidate, does beg several questions.

Why has Blocher's "surrogate son" chosen to leave the comfort of the bleachers and get down and dirty with the players on the field? Köppel's own admission that now was the time to stop the rot that is emerging from parliament and their socialist leanings is only an excuse. Given his age and popularity / unpopularity, media image and ability to argue on any level into consideration, it would be hard to imagine Köppel not being elected this fall.

I'd actually proffer the theory that the SVP is looking to groom a future Bundesrat member and with Köppel now approaching 50, the future politician's time seems to be ripe. Whatever one thinks of the SVP, the party has not had a political headline act to parallel Blocher. The Zürich section's Fehr, Mörgeli and Co. are poor communicators and totally incapable of winning over any new members to their cause. Even the SVP's own president, Tony Brunner (a young 40), is less than articluate in presenting his own party's political views to anyone other than those that directly share his views in the first place (farmers, anti-EU proponents, right wingers).

Köppel actually has the opportunity of kicking the SVP back into more liberal political territory and moving FDP (Liberal) voters into his fold if he uses his intellect rather than repeating standard SVP phraseology and cheap-shot posters which stigmatize and alienate everyone other than core SVP voters.

I for one wish Köppel well. But don't just "cut and paste" Blocher's recipes and hope to benefit from the old crowd. Drag the SVP back into the 21st Century and bring a more caring and liberal aspect into your political manifesto.

As opposed to left wing fiscal ineptitude and overspending?

It's about balance. Switzerland's Parliament does a great job of filtering out any potential extremism. Read up on Konkordanz if you don't understand the concept.

Re: Roger Köppel - SVP candidate

given the current political climate in Switzerland as well as in Europe, Köppel would be foolish not to make his foray directly into politics. he would also represent a quantum leap forward for the SVP, since he is more than capable of carrying the torch with the locals but plays significantly better outside of Switzerland than any of the current retreads.

Re: Roger Köppel - SVP candidate

Europe is heading for an abyss, filled with selfish right wing led countries.

It might be OK for the SVP to encourage right wing voters to stop all these nasty foreigners coming here, but who is going to actually create wealth here? Workers in foreign Swiss owned factories? Who will be paying into the European pension funds over the next 40 Years?

Blocher's generation are no longer active, we need much younger politicians with the drive to work within Europe, to encourage co-operation with other European countries, and to work to create a useful better society. We don't need anymore "nay sayers" we need people to go forth, capture the minds of the southern Europeans, and get them back in work.

With high unemployment in Spain, Italy, Greece etc we are peeing into the wind by insisting they pay back the defaulting loans immediately. After WWII the Marshall plan got Europe back on its feet, the USA didn't demand repayments before 1950 did they? They had the forsight to see that getting Europe working meant there would be more cash around to buy US products, and they did!

So are we going to sit in the dark, with all the gold in Europe, or are we going to trade with our neighbours and enjoy life?

Interesting is to see that he

for years worked for NZZ, Tages-Anzeiger and DieWelt. I do not like his political positions, but he is a definite professional. Nevertheless, for the time being, the power figure in the SVP still is Mr Blocher and is not expected to give up his control

the EU needs to cut Greece loose, and then insist that Spain and Italy (as well as others) begin addressing the very well-known issues surrounding corruption and tax evasion. any discussion of restructuring loans, etc. is meaningless without addressing the underlying problems that are leading to the risk of default.

Italy and Spain and Portugal DO tackle the Problems mentioned, but Progress is slow. Greece is important due to its geopolitical position. Greece even if it wanted is not able to start a new currency

A solution for Greece might be if the Greeks changed from the Euro to using the CHF in the way Liechtenstein does. The SNB would have to establish a Liaison Office in Syntagma Square in Athens downtown and could advise the Greeks about proper finance Business. THIS would reduce the exchange rate of the CHF to an acceptable level

All offices around Syntagma are taken by travel agencies. How about Omonia?

Or the Karaiskaki Square -- for example a few rooms in the Stanley Hotel Close to this square --- But yes, the Omonia Square is nice, in fact nicer than the more noble Syntagma Square

Can't really see it changing to be honest. Blocher is still the paymaster and will call the tune.

Also their strategy of hardline neoliberal policies enabled by using immigration and xenophobia as a wedge issue in elections has been successful so far so why change an effective formula?

Which means that Mr Köppel simply is his master's voice -- whatever, having been a Weltwoche subscriber for more than 20 years I stopped when Mr Köppel moved the publication into rightwing-extremist-waters

its advertising and public relations are absolutely horrific, but the underlying policies being pushed by the SVP - particularly around immigration - are far more popular in Switzerland and even in the broader Europe than many people like to admit. I suspect Köppel is smart enough to recognize this, which means the potential for real upside for him if he plays it right. likewise, I suspect the SVP is also smart enough to recognize this, which means the potential for real upside for the party if its plays it right.

Blocher is old, and candidly plays to just about every negative stereotype the typical non-Swiss European has about the Swiss. Mörgerli is simply an absolute disaster. by contrast, Köppel plays as more considered and much more thoughtful - he says the exact same thing, but does so in a completely different manner.

Re: Roger Köppel - SVP candidate

Seems the Zürich SVP democratically voted their list of candidates for the next Nationalrat election and put the lovely Ricki at number one and Koeppel at 17.
You will remember Rickli who got more votes than Blocher from the people at the last election where she stood.
According to Blick, see quote, Tony Brunner has reversed this decision and moved Köppler to number one, I do not know where Rickli finished. Good example of SVP support of democracy and women's rights.

I hope the SVP lady supporters fall in line and vote for Köppler.

I don't know to what extent Köppel is personally involve in the details of Weltwoche and to what extent he lets his journalists run amok. But I can't help but feel that he would take the quality of the SVP rthetoric up a peg or two. And this can only be good at a time that the other parties are not missing a trick to dumb down.

I always thought it was guys who loved Rickli.

What's a better sell for the SVP than a cute chick talking big on anti-feminist rhetoric.

Now Sepp has resigned we can judge how good is the quality of Köpp's rhetoric but I agree it will anyway improve the quality of SVP rhetoric. .

Except he didn't.

Brunner criticised the decision because, as per his assessment, SVP Zurich would have gotten one more seat with Köppel and Vogt in the two top spots. But the list is unchanged, neither did Brunner try to it seems.
