ZüRICH -- the Canton of Zürich today gets a new parliament and a new government --

Unclear is the number of seats per Party, clear however that both the Alternatives and the Pirates failed. The BDP of Eveline Widmer Schlump weak but not destroyed as predicted. The FPD-Liberals the winners

Nice to see the Green parties getting thrashed. Hopefully less lunatics & scaremongerers will be elected in the federal elections this October.

A good trend is established, so that we can hope for the best. The BDP may move towards uniting with another party to play a decent role, as may one of the Green parties

Re: ZüRICH -- the Canton of Zürich today gets a new parliament and a new government

There however are SEVEN Federal Councillors who are the Federal Government "in corpore". Does it mean that all Councillors are presents for decision reunions, sometimes most important ones?

So, the vote for Federal Councillors isn´t directly by the Swiss people? only by congress?

I´ve not known before that there is the Cantonal Governments and they´re voted directly by People. Is this a new change in the political system in CH? Sorry if I make some faults, ´cause it´s an influence directly by French language.
I studied the CH political system in 2001 in Geneva.

Switzerland fairly early adopted the battle cry of the French Revolution Der Souverän ist das Volk // le souverain c'est le People.

Really! a great influence by French Revolution? about the separation in 3 Powers, like here in Brazil.

Thanks to answer my questions and I appreciated also an article By Geoffrey Jones about globalization beauty. This article was important to my French material to teach.
Thanks very much

> YES, for major decisions the seven meet in closed session
> YES, they are voted into office by the Congress, NOT by the people
> BUT their decisions are subject to votes of the two Chambers of Parliament AND by direct popular votes
> AND the power of congress and Federal Government is limited by the considerable power of the Cantons
> NO, the Cantonal governments were the ones who in 1848 created the Union --- AND the ones who between 1291 and 1848 gradually built up the confederation --- THIS factor was a main point when Geneva in 1815 decided to NOT join France but the then rather shaky and unstable Swiss Confederation (in a well calculated risk)

Geneva was in Long-term bilateral alliances with Bern and Zürich, and the Genevans KNEW their ALEMANIQUE partners quite well, and knew what they were doing
