What was going on in Turkish consulate yesterday?

I passed by the Turkish consuilate on tram number 15 yesterday. There was a huge crowd of people standing outside, and also along the pavements and on the other side of the street and some even in the middle of the street and there were policemen controlling the traffic.

At first I thought it might be a demonstartion of some sort (in the past, Kurds have targetted that consulate for demonstartions, not always peaceful). But the crowd looked too peaceful for that and they appeared to be standing in a queue. There were several policement there looking on. Most of the crowd were middle aged to older people.

I though that maybe it was an election but then I checked and the Turkish general election isn't until next month.

Any idea what was going on?

Parliament elections going on in Turkey (src 20min.ch in German)
It was a bank holiday....so easier for workers to go vote than take a day off for that.

I'm in Turkey right now and the hotel staff just lowered the Turkish flag (at 10:15 local time)... just wondering why? It's a beautiful, sunny day -- no hint of bad weather ...

301 dead -- even worse than I had remembered. And a year ago already... time flies.

Re: What was going on in Turkish consulate yesterday?

Unfortunately the events leading to it and aftermath are far more tragic.
The accident could have been averted if warnings from the opposition MP had been given some thought, workers were not forced to work under unsafe conditions and mine owners did not have the backing of the governing party.
As in other similar cases, victims' families have been threatened not to speak out and protesters penalized.

Does the country take any lessons from past mistakes at least; unfortunately again no. Today's nongovernment papers were reporting maneuveurs from a particular municipality to permit the construction of a petrol station in an earthquake prone area on a known fault line.
