"I fell for the tabloids and believe that women need to arm themselves in Switzerland." Apparently does the not so smart part of the journalists in Switzerland believe that carrying a can of pepper spray would deter rapists...

1. If getting the spray out of her purse takes as long as my wife needs to find here keys...
2. If you are getting assaulted and your are not expertly trained will you be so nervous that you'll not react well with any weapon. Run, end of story.
3. The risk of an attacker using any weapon against you is rather real... and a pepper spray will not really stop anyone.

This is the whole gun debate again, but this time with some toy instead of a deadly weapon which actually can stop a person when used well.

Last I looked, Switzerland had an annual murder rate almost equal to that of South Africa's daily murder rate.
Even one murder per annum in Switzerland (or anywhere) is one too many.

Why does it only have to be about women? Are males not attacked, raped or murdered too?

It's a crock of shit. There's just as much stuff going on in Switzerland as anywhere else, relative to the size of the country.

It's just not talked about or blamed on a foreigner.
And that gets it out of the statistics. Obviously

Well, I have been to a significantly bigger industrialized nation with lower crime and especially homicide rate: Japan. Happens to have an extremely high life expectancy as well... so those CO2 emissions must be weighted rather weirdly. (and what do they have to do with "safety" anyway?)

high CO2 emissions -> low rate of nuclear power -> low risk of nuclear accident

OTOH

high CO2 emissions -> rise of sea level -> greater risk of tsunami -> greater risk of nuclear accident

think about it. There were no nuclear accidents prior to the industrial revolution. I think this is proof enough that they are caused by global warming.

And what does that have to do with anything? German may be the majority language but it's not the only one.
Not everybody who lives here went to school here either.

In any case this is English forum and the rules state that an English translation should be provided for and text in a foreign language irrespective of what that language is.

"The Afros should simply learn German" - approximately. (suppose he meant Africans)

He said the yearly rate in Switzerland is equal to the DAILY one in RSA. Which is not true: it is equal to the weekly one. Still bad enough. On the upside is the food way better in South Africa...

I blame the English forum!

I guarantee that if we plot the number of users over time and over lay it onto some sort of carbon emission representation for the equivalent time---there will be a direct correlation!

But the question is, do I want to give up on EF to do my part for the environment?

I need to take time to think about this one---going for a drive

Re: Switzerland ranked world safest country

At the end of it all, every country has it's risks when it comes down to it.

The question is what you want to be at risk of:
  1. breathing yourself to death
  2. falling off a mountain or it on you
  3. being buried by snow
  4. at the hands of a desperate criminal
PS: thanks for correcting my mathematical error, it was a while ago when I looked but still a ridiculous figure . Maybe the bad guys are running out of targets

as safe as switzerland might seem; I just read this article from the central switzzerland where the KAPO SZ informs people that peeper spray use is allowed for self defense as long as it does not contain tear gas.

Pepper Spray - a legal means of self-defense

Not only women, even police use pepper spray. Its handling learn police in training. Picture kaposz

After the rape in Emmen many women feel unsafe. Run with a pepper spray in your purse, they can defend themselves in case of emergency.
Irene Lustenberger

On the evening of July 21, an unidentified tears in Emmen, a 26-year-old woman from Velo and raped her in a wooded area. Since then, the victim is paralyzed from the neck down.
The incident is upsetting and arouses especially in women fear. Therefore it is not surprising that pepper sprays have since asked in Lucerne and surroundings.

"Any person over 18 years old may have a pepper spray and carry with you," confirms David Mynall, Spokesman of the Canton Police Schwyz. Because the active ingredient is pepper spray no gun, tear gas does. "Pepper spray reaches only to the mucous membranes, but tear gas affects the respiratory tract. This can be life threatening for the person concerned, "Mynall throws. Nevertheless, pepper spray should be used only for self-defense or defense of an attack. «If the spray used arbitrarily, the affected person may make a complaint of assault", the Spokesman. The full article can be read in "March-Anzeiger" and the "Höfner Volksblatt" on Monday.
