Thanks for the pepper-spray article.

Brutal rape and murder are of course unfortunately not at all new also in CH . As the jogging and cycling evenings start to become darker, I find the idea not a bad one .

Have just looked, and they are freely purchasable online in CH, also with carry alarm combinations. Oh well, better safe than sorry...

Re: Switzerland ranked world safest country

The study isn't perfect and they never are, we can always manipulate statistics to support the view we are trying to propagate.

Wife of a Swiss stated its not talked about, I agree. when we moved to Switzerland we were encouraged to let the children be independent and walk to school on their own. I asked if it was dangerous for young children to walk alone and was told not at all. two months later a front page article in local paper stating 300 children a year go missing in Switzerland. It was that safe for one of the 300 families.

I don't think those 300 all go missing while walking to school. There are family disputes and things with divorced parents etc squabbling over guardianship rights and such stories.

It's a fact that the vast majority of crimes against kids from sexual abuse to homicide happen within the family or close neighbors/friends of the parents. Driving your kid with your SUV into the classroom and making sure it won't ever be independent won't change this. All it does is to pose a traffic risk for the kids who walk to school thanks to their reasonable parents.

Correct. And such is what you get "served" when you support Multi Lingual info provided by the Federal Railways or Zürich Public Transporft (ZVV/VBZ)

Long gone are the times when quite many Romands behaved as if being the majority. Add do this that the relevant info ought to be and often IS also translated into
- Italian
- Portuguese
- Albanian
- Turkish
- Arabic

No, it iS wrong, as it was and is talked about since the 1950ies and 60ies. However, it is generally accepted that children indeed should go to walk to School on their own. Most of the children who get missing do so NOT on their way to and from School and not by rape or murder but by accident

Further on, your question IS IT DANGEROUS will be interpreted by most locals as is it dangerous IN THIS AREA and so as a veiled attack

in the 1960ies THE Topic in our area were two potential rapists with a keen interest in teenager boys. One of our teachers traced for the, found them, approached them, and they fled and were never seen again. Some of the Dads even RErouted their ways to look round in the particular area until it became safe again

It was even in Tages Anzeiger and NZZ

I find the idea disastrous.
A) REAL criminals know well how to Counter
B) some People who feel threatened will attack innocent
C) Innocents attacked or their friends or relatives will retaliate

An attacker will typically use surprise. Unless you have the pepper spray in your hands you're virtually guaranteed to be too slow. And even that assumes you're using it well, which seems not too likely without training. Not to mention that the stream can be blocked by a hand or arm - unless perhaps if you're fairly close, in which case it's easy to grab and divert the hand holding it.

All the pepper spray does is create a false impression of safety (no issue with that as nobody else is threatened by a meaningful degree), it just doesn't reduce the danger.

Re: Switzerland ranked world safest country

What a heated discussion here!

I am Swiss and I didn't read the study, but in my opinion safety is correlated with wealth and the social framework and institutions which are around to support people who are in tough and desperate situations.

On how safe people feel, regardless of the statistics, I guess most people living here would agree that usually no matter the time or location, it feels quite safe to be out on the street...

wealth may be important BUT not really THE major factor. You are safe in cities like Cairo and Tunis and Casablanca which are not exactly wealthy

'Most' being the essential word there.
Anyone who has been attacked on the street for any reason or in any way will take some time to get over it and it will be a long time before they genuinely can feel safe to be out on the street, particularly at night.

There is truth to this statement but it goes further. From experience in a society ranging from wealthy to poor enough to scour refuse sites for a living, it relates to education and evolution.

Generally speaking, in societies where the majority of the population is well educated and can understand the concepts of right and wrong crime is lower.
Lower education leads to poverty and poverty leads to desperate acts by desperate people trying to survive.
Religion also plays a part as strong believers in most faiths are afraid of the Almighty punishing wrongful acts.

One of the biggest deterring factors though is the faith in the police and the legal system. If your police can not catch a cold let alone a criminal, why should criminals fear being caught. If the legal system does not fit the punishment to the crime, even less to worry about.
