You just have to do it the Swiss way. Figure out where you will want to hitch-hike from and to and arrange with a Swiss person who will be going along that route at least 9 months ahead.

Sure, it takes a bit of planning, but at least you can get down-to-the-second hitch-hiking accurate timetables.

Re: Swiss don't stop for hitch hikers and don't invite anybod to their homes

I had to hitch-hike in a snow blizzard 2 years ago- I was picked up in less than 2 minutes by the second car that came along and the guy, a young farmer, really got out of his way to take me to my car
I took him a nice bottle of vino 2 days later and left it behind his door with a card- as he had shown me where he lived as we were on our way.

25% of the swiss population have a foreign passport, and many more have been born and raised abroad.

So, everything else being equal, 25% of the cars on that main road were driven by foreigners, who also didn't stop.

We stop for hitch hikers and so far only had positive experiences. No one mentioned it yet but, Switzerland has a hitchhikers club They organized 'championships' this year and are aiming to fight prejudices.

Re: Swiss don't stop for hitch hikers and don't invite anybod to their homes

I always try to help. Be it hitchhikers, be it anyone who seem to be genuine and would do fine if offered some assistance. Kind of how we were brought up to be honest. We were always helped by people and were taught how important it is to give back to society/community in order for the ball to be kept rolling.

So you can imagine how I might have struggled when I came here on Xmas in 2006 and was shocked to see no one cared to wish/celebrate it with any one other than their family. I gave them benefit of the doubt as it might not be in their culture to start partying with some one they barely know. But I am sure 9 years is enough to know any one, but the most I have been invited was to be educated on not to flush after 20.00.

Kinda went off topic
