What is being built at the end of the runway at Geneva airport?

On the other side of the route de Meyrin, they've been working for more than a year, and from what I glimpse as I pass on the tram in the morning, they're digging quite deep. As it's directly under the flightpath, I assume it's not going to be a block of flats (although they've got an, admittedly short, tower crane on site now).

So what's it going to be? No informative signs on the surrounding boards.

No, that's on the CERN side of Meyrin.

Looking at a map in your link. I don't think the construction is in the commune of Meyrin, but Vernier.

After many years of Cern physics experiments, they have to empty the tunnel, it is full up with particles. http://home.web.cern.ch/about/experiments

Re: What is being built at the end of the runway at Geneva airport?

In the unlikely event that anyone else is interested, I've found out that it's going to be a depot and workshop for the TPG: http://www.tpg.ch/en-chardon

Now the next thing I want to know is where the other end of that new aggregate conveyor belt is. It seems to emerge by the railway line by the old Meyrin-Vernier Cargo station and continues to the gravel pits at Montfleury. It must have cost a fortune to build (not to mention all the permissions that must have been got to cross various properties and roads). It is obviously working because there is a heap under the end at Montfleury, but where has it come from?

I do seem to lead a dull life.

Sorry, I missed this thread. I could have answered your question weeks ago. I know the area very well; also it's a few blocks away from SOS Chats where I often go on Saturdays.

Linnéa - thanks. Once I'd worked out what a conveyer belt was in French I had found some of the links you posted.

You have to hand it to them for being so thorough. Building a 1.6 kilometre conveyer-belt costing CHF 6m that is only going to be used for a year or so, to save 30,000 truck journeys is quite impressive. Chapeaux!
