Re: Geneva - Heightened Security Alert

The whole area around Rondpoint de Rive was closed off for a while last night - apparently someone left a rucksack near the McDonalds...

So basically all the kids are telling their teachers they didn't do their homework as their bag was blown up by the police.

Le Matin has pictures of the five terrorism suspects on its website. Unfortunately, their eyes are covered so it might be difficult to identify them other than by their scruffy beards:

Re: Geneva - Heightened Security Alert

"Two men of Syrian origin were arrested in Geneva on Friday, which is heightened alert because of a jihadist threat, and traces of explosives were found in their car, announced the Swiss public television RTS. A police operation is underway in Switzerland, on a road leading to the French border, shows the RTS.

A spokesperson of the Cantonal Police confirmed Friday evening to AFP that there had been a "vehicle control" and that this operation was now complete. Asked about the arrests announced by Swiss television, the spokesman declined to confirm or refute, referring to the Geneva public prosecutor. The Geneva Public Ministry could not be reached in the evening. Four men actively sought since Wednesday in Geneva following information provided by a foreign intelligence service.

The four suspects, whose photo was broadcast by Swiss media, are linked to the Islamic State group. The Public Ministry of the Confederation (MPC), which is in Bern, told the agency ats have no knowledge of arrests "for (the) pending criminal proceedings."

The MPC said Thursday it had opened a criminal investigation "on the basis of a terrorist threat in the Geneva region." The main aim of the authorities is "to prevent a terrorist event," the source said. Despite the raising of the terror alert level, no event has been canceled for the time in Geneva. The question was particularly festivities for the Escalade, which meet this weekend thousands of people to the city center and will end Sunday with a great historical parade.

The Confederation was informed of a terrorist threat in Geneva by a foreign intelligence service, told the press the president of the Confederation Sommaruga. According to her, there is no indication that Switzerland is now a direct target of the Islamic State, the jihadist group that has claimed responsibility for the attacks that killed 130 people in Paris on November 13."

Pretty quiet here again today. One announcement about all unattended bags being treated as suspicious but not a policeman or security guard in sight.

Pair held over suspected explosives plot in Switzerland
Two men of Syrian origin arrested in Geneva also suspected of violating federal law which bans membership of groups affiliated to Isis or al-Qaida

Two men of Syrian origin suspected of being linked to terrorism were arrested in Geneva on Friday after traces of explosives were found, a government official has said.

Prosecutor Olivier Jornot said the two men had recently arrived in Geneva when they were arrested and did not speak French.

The Swiss attorney general’s office said earlier that the two men being held were arrested on suspicion of making, hiding and transporting explosives, as well as for violating federal law, which bans membership of groups affiliated to Islamic State or al-Qaida.

More arrests were expected in the coming days amid heightened security in the Swiss city, Jornot said.

Geneva security officials had recently raised the alert level in the city in connection with a hunt for four suspects linked to the Paris attacks on 13 November, but Jornot said there was no indication that these suspects were in Switzerland.

The two being held were arrested on Friday on the road outside Cologny, a municipality in the canton of Geneva, SwissInfo reported.

Earlier this week, Swiss media circulated police images of four men alleged to be members of Isis, whom authorities were hunting, reportedly after a US intelligence tip-off.

The department would not comment on whether the four being hunted were believed to have had any direct role in the Paris attacks, where 130 people were killed by gunmen and suicide bombers.

Swiss justice minister, Simonetta Sommaruga, said on Friday that authorities had no reason to believe terrorists were planning a specific attack in Switzerland.

Pierre Maudet, Geneva’s head of the security and economic affairs department, told the local Le Temps newspaper that security in the city would be heightened but played down connections to the recent situation in Brussels. “We can’t say that an attack has been foiled today,” Maudet said, but added that precautions continue “while the more precise threat still exists”.

I've also heard that many Syrians carry their goods in large earthenware pots, but because they have so many and they are big and awkward to carry, that they often lose urns.

Maybe he was thinking that?

Because it's easily accessible from France and houses many international organisations.

I don't think the terrorists are that concerned about number per square kilometre tbh, it's the overall total that counts to them so I think the residents of Luzern can probably sleep easy in their beds tonight.
