Well let us take the gegen Masseneinwanderung vote as an example!

25% of the population are classed as foreign so did not vote.

56% of the people eligible to vote did vote which is 42% of the population (56% of 75%).

The NO vote was 49.7% so now we know that slightly under 21% of the population actually voted against the gegen Masseneinwanderung.
The rest (79%) either voted YES, or did not care enough to vote or were not eligible to vote

So, pretty close to the 80% that I stated previously!

Tom
If 25% are not eligible to vote then is not 56% of the remainder really 56% anyway since the non eligibles dont count anyway as they cant vote?

From 20min today:

"Allerdings gaben mindestens drei Personen an, sie befürworteten die automatische Ausschaffung krimineller Ausländer – wollten dies aber nicht vor der Kamera sagen. «Sonst werde ich von allen beschimpft», so ein Schweizer mit Migrationshintergrund."

I always have the feeling many of those with migration background are actually the ones who are very supportive of this initiative.
Yesterday, I got reminded by my colleagues from overseas that Switzerland would vote today. The queries make one feel like if one is being responsible for this campaign. Sometimes, it's good that one doesn't have a right of vote ...

Also the world's media are focused on CH today, watching us closely like big brother ...

Swiss vote whether to expel foreigners for minor crimes

From today's Guardian here
"Switzerland votes on expelling foreigners for minor crimes
Voters will be asked if foreign national guilty of two minor crimes, such as traffic offences, in 10 years, should be expelled"
As we know traffic offenses are not part of the DSI. Such wrong details always contribute to my ever growing "suspicion bias" which is applied when I read or hear in the press a report about a topic I do not know so much about. Hmm.

Anyway, polls closed since noon. Let us wait for the tally up.

Re: Feb. 28th vote on enforced implementation of the deportation initiative

According to the results so far it seems that the no vote is winning for the moment with a higher than average turnout of voters.

( gotthard is a yes and the couples taxation initiative is a close call at the moment, can't remember what the food thing result so far was as it seems to be being largely ignored due to the importance of the others)

The "food thing" is a clear No.

And the turnout seems to be around 2/3. Which is one of the highest in the recent past.

In Vaud and Zurich the DSI may get dismissed with a higher No vote then the idealistic and "let us at least set a tiny mark" anti-food-speculation initiative
Quite a blow for the SPV/UDC.

Re: Feb. 28th vote on enforced implementation of the deportation initiative

So, I assume foreigners in this country are supposed to function like robots. Get rid of our flawed human traits that makes us do something stupid like park your car without a parking fee once in a while.

It seems the subtext of this "law" clearly is just to trim the number of the "undesirable people" to a household number.

It's ok, their country their rules. But, to post ads saying "criminal foreigners" was massively misleading, as it delineates every foreigner who will have a stupid, naive moment in any given day is a criminal, and this all but neutral.

Which law? The proposed change of the constitution which is being dismissed?

56.3% percent voted NO!! To deport "criminal" foreigners.

Thank G-d!, my faith in Swiss people restored.

For the record. I am all for deporting rapists, murders and all. But, no minor offense like driving 36km/h on a 35km limit should be the reason to label you a criminal or be the reason for your deportation.

Well both stats are wrong since 100% of the population is impossible to achieve at best you cant exceed 75%

By the way I am proud to be part of the ones that cant vote

Seems to be safe now to say the DSI initiative is dismissed, I am surprised and pleased.

It is almost the basis for a case study on "Be careful what you wish for!"

The SVP has been claiming for a long time that they are the underdog and everybody else (the Establishment) are working in concert against them. This was not really the case.

But now the SVP has managed upset enough people that they really started working together against this SVP initiative; quite likely after this success we will see more such concerted political actions.

Couple of comments on the election, firstly it was great to see such a high turnout of voters and secondly something stinks in Kanton Bern; so far not one Gemeinde has managed to count their votes.

I really like the high turn out. Sad is it not always the case.

About Bern: This is usual and nothing new. You know, they have to keep a certain reputation.
