Swiss man faces up to 75 years in prison for insulting Thai king.

He bloody deserves it!!!!

Quote:
CHIANG MAI, Thailand : A Swiss man faces up to 75 years in prison after pleading guilty Monday to charges of insulting Thailand's king, a serious offence in a nation where the monarch is revered.

Oliver Jufer, 57, was arrested on December 5 for defacing several of the king's ubiquitous portraits with spray paint during a drunken spree through the northern city of Chiang Mai, 700 kilometres (400 miles) north of Bangkok.

He was charged with five counts of lese majeste -- the crime of offending the dignity of a sovereign -- as well as lesser charges of destruction of public property.

If convicted he faces up to 75 years in prison, according to police, 15 for each of the counts of lese majeste.

"He pleaded guilty, and the court set a date for the verdict on March 29," one court official said.

Court officials and police provided few details of the three-hour hearing held behind closed doors, citing sensitivities surrounding the monarchy ... read more

So you think he deserves 75 years for that? He deserves punishment for being a looser but not 75 years!

Well, if he is the same man who spat on the king's potrait simply because he couldn't buy any form of alcohol on Dec 4, which is the king's birthday. Then yes, he deserves the sentence, every single year of the sentence.

Either you are a Thai person who worships the king and is being emotional or you need to use some logic!
None of those acts in a civil society should lead to 75 YEARS in prison! Jeez if I was the king I would be embarrassed to know that someone got 75 years for spraying or spitting on my PORTRAIT! Jeez talk about having a big ego!

Do me a favour.
75 years, that's insane. He doesn't deserve that.
Get a grip

Lifted from the bbc..

At one point the prosecutor tried to get the media to leave, saying the case had been postponed.
"We don't want the Thai people to know about this case," he said.
The image of the monarchy is very carefully managed, with local media only allowed to lavish praise on the king, our correspondent says.
The popular reverence for him is genuine, but the draconian laws deter most Thais from even discussing the monarchy.
The king himself appeared to question this in a recent speech when he said it was wrong to put him above criticism. "I am not afraid if the criticism concerns what I do wrong, because then I know," he said. "If you say the king cannot be criticised, it means that the king is not human."

I thought they still had the death penalty in Thailand - at least he can ask for that as an easy way out

You see in a civilized world, He could just said OK, and walk away but instead he went beserk and spat on the king's picture. Surely, one day without alcohol won't kill you.

I'm not Thai but I've lived in Thailand for 2 years and have seen a lot of uncivilized acts that have been carried out by some westerners who come from "civilized" country.

He deserves no sympathy from me, really.

So if everyone who insulted the Queen of England got a life sentence, would they too deserve it?

How about a lifetime in Guantanamo for insulting George Bush.

No matter the reverence you bestow upon your monarch some things which relate to basic humanity are simply disproportionate.

Ok hold on, we are talking about his actions here and not just mere verbal insults.

Less dramatic report from Telegraph.co.uk and he's from Zurich.

No, many people have burned effigies, sabotaged portraits and slandered either Tony, George or that useless idle queen.

Although I think it would have been an interesting piece of history had the Sex Pistols been locked up in the tower of London for 75 years for sailing down the Thames singing "God save the Queen" whilst defacing her portrait and gobbing on it.

What would you think if a man walks into a bar in America, he's wasted and starts trashing the portrait of Dubya. As punishment he's given 75 years in Guantanamo. Proportionate punishment?

Ok let see here,

Sex Pistols are English so pretty much they'll get a mixed emotion kida support.

If a man walks into a bar in America, wasted and starts to trash the potrait of Dubya. This really depends on the nationality of the man in question.

If he's an American .. pretty much they'll ask him why and perhaps kick him in the ass a little bit.

If he's English .. pretty much the same action as above.

But if his skin doen't resemble the colour of the western population, he'll be in the middle of mass kicking orgy and if it happens in Texas, they'll probably tie him to the back of a pick-up truck and drag him around town after the mass kicking orgy. Then sent him off to Guantanamo.

I think you missed my point.

The Sex Pistols is a true story, that's what happened as a marketing stunt.

I'm not getting into race issues here. My question is simply, that if a man, any man, got banged up in Guantanamo for defacing a portrait of his holiness Dubya:

Would YOU think it was reasonable?

I'm not sympathising with the Swiss guy, I couldn't care, he sounds like a stupid man, but there is surely a level of punishment that is reasonable and humane.

You say when in Rome...

Well then I ask you, the opposition leader in Zimbabwe was arrested at a gathering for speaking out against His Holiness Mr Mugabe. Mr Tsvangirai was beaten to beyond recognition and is lying unconscious in hospital. Since Mr Mugabe makes the rules, are we to say that Mr Tsvangirai deserves the beating he received because he broke the law?

Some things just aren't balanced or fair, or proportionate.

Do you really, really think that this Swiss guy deserves to be imprisoned for any period of time for what he did? (Even though he pleaded guilty)

First you are reading too much into my "civilized" comment. I don't think that Thai in general are uncivilized nor do I think that people in the west are more civilized.
The Swiss guys act was not civilized but it was not uncivilized enough to warrant 75 years.

In a country where he is revered by many Thais as a semi-divine figure, don't you think you that his actions are way beyond rude.
