Wow that's awful... hope he's ok. Maybe he was drunk and fell or slipped somewhere.

This is really strange. However most disappearances are unusual, otherwise people would know where the people were.
Hopefully, he'll wake up from a massive bender in some random town nearby, but one never knows.

There was a young American guy who went missing in Frankfurt, Germany last month under very similar circumstances. He was out drinking one evening and never came home.
The family themselves were posting on the German forum desperately collecting as much info as they could. A month later, just before Christmas, he was found in the river. Police reckon he fell in while drunk. Very tragic.
Fingers crossed the same hasn't happened here. At least there are no rivers in the immediate area of Wengen, as far as I can tell.

I read about it in yesterday's times. Most shocking. From the online article: “They tracked his mobile but wouldn’t tell us the details because I think they don’t want people to go looking if they are potentially in dangerous areas. “They said it had shown up in the south side of Wengen and that’s all they would say. It’s a complete mystery to us.” |

A quick image of Wengen and surrounding area that I got from google earth.
This is looking north. You can see the terrain is quite treacherous - especially to the west. There also seems to be a type of ravine towards the south part of Wengen - where the mobile signal is reported to have come from.
To be honest, and I hate to be cynical, but as he's now been missing for 4-5 days I don't hold much hope that he'll be found alive. Especially at this time of year.
I can only hope that he's deliberately gone missing.
Edited to add that all this will be covered in snow at the moment making the search and rescue extremely difficult.

In both of those articles, there is only casual mention of the female friend...?
Perhaps there was something back home which would have kept him from following his heart in an up-front honest way and he's "gone missing" in attempt for new life (with her)?

Doesn't look good for the young man.
Not quite the same, but I once got lost in the woods between Wallisellen and Kloten (don't laugh) at night on my bike. I was petrified! It was completely dark and very frightening.
Looking back now, I just can't believe I got disorientated so quickly.
I could speculate this is what happened to the poor bloke in Wengen.
He's either dead or as Peg A suggests started a new life...
I would favour the former. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam%27s_razor "the simplest explanation or strategy tends to be the best one"

But don't you think that as he was away with his family (so he is obviously close) that he would have called them if he was not going to come back that night and the fact that he was not drunk makes me fear the worse.
I really feel for his family and pray they have news very soon.

I think he fell down somewhere and died. Those policemen in Wengen know this but as long as not having such bad evidence try to be polite and diplomatic. I expect him to be found within some two days | | This user would like to thank Wollishofener for this useful post: | |

I was in Wengen once skiing & stayed for a night & it didn't seem dangerous in any way to me as everything in the village was in close proximity. Even a short walk out of the village wasn't hazardous in any way, still a mystery though...

I have some friends from the UK staying up here on Flumserberg and when they arrived last night, before I even read this story, I told the 3 teenage sons to be very careful walking back to their hotel at night from the clubs. Late nights, booze, icy roads and -15 and lower temperatures can be very dangerous.
It's not looking good for the guy and I can't imagine what his family and friends must be going through.
Just remember that this thread could be found by them through Google now (I'm sure some of them will be searching for background info - anything that might help) so please keep a lid on any morbid speculation.
