During the days of slavery black people were called n*****s, (read anything by Mark Twain!) after slavery was abolished the word changed to "negro", during the time of Black Power they called themselves "black" and today it is "African Americans".
Today, gansta rappers call each other n*****s, but you as a white person shouldn't do so.

1. not all from USA
2 not all from Africa (Jamaica,etc)
