So if I marketed my new smoking and roasting machine as "Auschwitz" with the tagline "ruthless efficiency, military precision" that would be OK because I'm talking about chicken not people? If not then how is it different? | Quote: | | | | | get over it !!!

Into the minefield we go.....
I think they are some sort of candy from the Former Yugoslavia, either Croatia or Servia, sold in the Coop and for the Croats or Serbs it is perfectly normal name as they did not use the term Negro for black or coloured people. The term Negro is purely used by English speaking people, so if it is used in context with a language which is not English speraking, how can it be racist ?
Boom, i think i just hit a mine, not sure if it's life threatning as yet though | | The following 3 users would like to thank Charlie R. Soles for this useful post:

[/IMG] | | | | | Because "Auschwitz" isnt an extremely commonly used word and is in fact one of the most common colour words, alongside white and red?
Because calling candies by their colour isnt in any way related to racial or ethnic slurs?

Why is it, when someone is offended by something, they're immediately branded PC or sensitive? What bulls**t!

Have a look at this for a laugh at some epic translation fails: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/busin...7394/index.htm
On the other hand, I remember being quite astonished to find "Negerbrot" (which is exactly what you might think it translates as) in Austria, designating large bars of chocolates with peanuts. | | | | | Im really pleased its a simple case of translation failure

Meh, perhaps. Would never happen in the UK, imported item or not. Negro isn't black in Swiss German is it? French? No.
I'm always slightly taken aback at the excitable zeal covert racists display in locating and defending their right to sail close to the wind. They scream and shout and look at the linguistics behind various words (of course the word n****r is also related to the Spanish word for black and negro is the Spanish word for black, though still unacceptable to use as identification of a human outside of Spain).
Racism is almost always hidden in the shadows which is why the torch must shine extra brightly to expose it. | Quote: | | | | | Because "Auschwitz" isnt an extremely commonly used word and is in fact one of the most common colour words, alongside white and red?

| | | Re: 'Negroe' sweets | Quote: | | | | | Is the word negro insulting to black people? | | | | | As far as I knew, yes if <and this bit's important> used by a white person.

But it all goes a bit daft when schools and training centres are instructed to call their blackboards "chalkboards" so as not to offend anyone from any particular ethnic background. | | The following 3 users would like to thank Sandgrounder for this useful post:
