| | | Re: 'Negroe' sweets | Quote: | | | | | Are you seriously equating the discrimination between the Irsh and black people? | | | | |
Actually, YES.
It weren't always black people who were slaves honey.
Does "indentured servant" really seem like it would have been so much better? (That's how some of MY ancestors arrived in the US...)
If you think so, why not ask some of the folk who come to the US (or anywhere better-off) these days and are held in a state of indebted servitude until such time as they can pay back the monies spent to bring them over...
I'm not sure how much you think nail techs or restaurant kitchen help makes in an hour (or a week or a month) but I'm willing to bet it isn't enough to make a life AND pay off those kind of debts. | Quote: | | | | | In my lifetime america was segregated and although laws have passed if your black and poor you are still at a disadvantage. As in many countries dont you get it? | | | | | Actually, if you travel around a bit in the US, you can easily see that it is STILL segregated, just not in any "official" way. (Drive around Savannah for a while but make sure you are actually paying attention or else you may miss what it plainly obvious to anyone with open eyes.)
Meanwhile, in some areas of the US, Irish (or more specifically Catholic Irish) face discrimination as well...
Much like Sharkey's example regarding Paddy, my grandmother detests the nickname "Mick" and "Mickey" as it was also used in unkind ways to refer to (read: single out and vilify) Irish immigrants when she was young.
WAKE UP and smell the coffee. Discrimination is a lot more complicated than simple "black and white."

| | | Re: 'Negroe' sweets | Quote: | | | | | To speak clearly, the word "Negro" is NOT an insult and not negative, while the word "nigger" IS an insult. And the German word Neger is not negative and not an insult
And a look into the German phone-book shows how widespread the family-name Neger (they are NOT Blacks ! ) actually is : | | | | | It's even worse, there are german origin people that have 'black negro' as a family name. What else would Schwarzenegger (like in the moviestar/governer of california) mean ?

This from a person so ignorant as to expect the word 'negro' to mean the same thing and have the same connotations in Croatia (or, for that matter, the entire Spanish and Portuguese speaking world) as it does in Wales.

Susie, I (and I imagine most other EFer's) am not interested in Copy and Paste arguments. They do very little except clog up the thread.
If you want to argue your side, then feel free to do it. But please use your own words instead of cutting other peoples work from random websites. By all means feel free to link to an artricle you refer to, but I don't think we need it reproduced verbatim here.
You can link to a different webpage by copying the URL from the address bar. Then highlight the text in your post that you want to use as the link.(eg, in this sentence, the word link will bring you to a clip from 30 Rock, an award winning US comedy show)
Once you have the word highlighted, click on the button, and paste the URL in. Et Viola.

Susie: Welcome to Europe! It's not America. We have a different history, different attitudes and even different languages.
Once you realize that racism goes beyond black vs. white throughout the world, you will finally become a greater person.
Some differences between the US and Switzerland:
- The Swiss do not stand up and say their "pledge of allegience" anywhere
- They allow their kids more freedom because "fear" has not become an overwhelming thought.
- It's OK to talk about politics
- When you are talking about racism in Switzerland, you need to be clear: is it against the ex-yugos, the Northern Africans, the Muslims or another nation/religion?
- The Catholic and Protestant religion is losing ground in Switzerland and, outside of its wonderful public holidays, no longer dictates the daily lives of the locals.
- Even the Swiss know that just because something is right in Switzerland, it doesn't make it right in other countries.

You are comparing a country the size of Europe with a mere dot on a map. There are probably more children in the US than inhabitants in Switzerland....thus making your statement a blatant assumption.

Schwarzen-Egger http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egger
and in full meant "Black haired Egger"
