End of The World As We Know It postponed (yet again)

The Large Hadron Collider must close at the end of 2011 for up to
a year to address design issues, according to an LHC director.

It's something that, with a lot more resources and with a lot more manpower and quality control, possibly could have been avoided but I have difficulty in thinking that this is something that was a design error.
LOL Don't all Project Managers use that as an excuse?

Let's just do all the kids and more or less grown men a dirty great big favor and turn over the tunnel to racing model Scalextric cars. Would this require a referendum as most of CERN is burrowed through French soil?

Higgs Boson Discovered!

I guess the LHC is now surplus to requirements; certainly, according to the latest news...

I think they just don't want to share what they are finding. Which, after all that money, appears to nothing.

If this is true it really pisses me off, 5 Bn and some incompetents can not even design the thing properly.

More likley these are lies, and they are running the device at expected speeds.

When they announced that they wanted to start it a year or a couple ago people in India started taking their lives, so that would be a motivator to lie about the doomsday machine, no?

Very strange, why commit suicide over the world ending? It's not like you'd have long to wait anyway.

I'd have been suprised if such a massive project didn't have a few design problems.

It's not conspirational crap, and I don't think it's design flaws either. At least, not the kind which could have been avoided with more time on the design board.

As one of those scientist said, the LHC is it's own prototype. It's the first ever built (at that level of power) and they only will build the one. The project is bound to run into that kind of problems, since it's unknown territory.

I agree I would have been rather surprised if everything had gone perfectly as planned with such a huge endeavor.

On another note, as a Swiss, I feel pretty proud of that thing. I know it's stupid because for one thing I hadn't any part in it, and also it's internationaly financed and staffed. And a good chunk of it is actually under french soil. Still happy anyhow

How much was that thing again?

I can't say I feel proud about it. It's more embarrassing than a source of pride.

5-6 Bn Euros.

May I ask why you see it as a source of embarrassment? It makes my mind boggle to even read your statement, but before jumping to conclusions I would like to hear your reasons

are you also embarrassed about the fusion reactor that cost a lot more than the LHC?

Isn't this very strange and extremely scary - with all the postponements at the LHC, the day we are finally going to arrive will be closer and closer to December 21, 2012, which is when as the Mayans predicted when the world will end!!

many religions have their own end of the world pencilled on the calendar... Somehow I don't think that a technical glitch at the LHC will make their calendars accurate
