Run a country with your own laws. | | | | | So you can't criticise another country's laws or punishments?
Seems rather limiting. Of course attitudes are local, but rights and morality transcend borders.
Just because something's legal in a country that doesn't make it right. And just because something's illegal that doesn't make it right.
Turn back the clock and your argument could be used to suppress criticism of slavery.

BTW, I completely agree with your statement above.
It's one of the reasons that I object to so many laws in so many countries.
Just because we can do a thing doesn't mean that we should.

This thread was never meant to change laws, it was an outlet for opinion for and against such punishment. It is highly insensitive of you to just sweep compassionate views aside merely because you feel they carry no weight. I hope and pray that your children will never be in such a position lashed to that frame. If it isn't right for your own children then it isn't right for any children or human being. Being far away makes no difference, being in another jurisdiction makes no difference. What does make a difference is that ordinary people raise their voice and speak out against these atrocities. You may not be listening, you may have gagged your own conscience in a convenient way, but these wind lost murmurings you denounce are the seeds of descent that make the greatest changes. Change starts with a thought, carried into words and ended with deed. Woe to the idiot that thinks the smallest voice is lost when spoken against the greatest crimes.

The problem is, that I cannot equate caning with the atrocity you clearly feel it is.
I pray that neither I, my family and children, nor anyone - for that matter - has to face the cane (well, figuratively anyway) but if they've committed the crime... <refer back to previous posts>

Harsh but it is what it is.
Well, the good man in the future after his 5 months imprisonment might rather abstain from FKK beaches |

Correct. And watching this interview with that "elder statesman" of Singapore makes it clear that he is not particularily fond of this aspect of this country, even if he himself signed many of the decrees behind it. In spite of my limited knowledge of Singapore, I am quite confident that Singapore will abolish this shit in a not too distant future. But right now, the "culprit" in question will have to take the suffering, and will have to realize that his backside will not look nice for some years to come. And "only" three strokes ? The pictures above show that it is horrible enough to have to suffer it. But the question again, why the f... did the man not leave immediately ?
I expect the "executioner" to hit with the fullest force possible in order to rip open his backside-skin and have the blood flowing ! This will be the reality ! | Quote: | | | | | Wrong , wrong and wrong again. This thread was never meant to change laws, it was an outlet for opinion for and against such punishment. To those who think the punishment is barbaric, it is not long ago that several western countries had realy barbaric punishment and some still have. I would say some US laws are realy barbaric too. e.g a Mother was sentenced to a 12year imprisonment because her partner did kill her child.
Just make sure you behave in a normal manner and sift through your lugage bags before paking on the trip to singapoore or malaysia. There might be somewhere forgotten marihuana which could cause you are ending your holiday hanging on a rope.

Swiss President Doris Leuthard called on President Nathan at the Istana during her one-day working visit here
SWISS President Doris Leuthard did not make any plea for the convicted Swiss vandal when she met her Singapore counterpart, Mr S R Nathan, at the Istana on Friday.
Ms Leuthard, who was here on a one-day working visit, told a news conference there was no 'big debate' over the matter although she also made it clear that corporal punishment was not the Swiss way.
'I discussed it with the President, but you know for us it is not a big debate,' she said. 'We agree that he is guilty, which he also accepts by the way. It's correct what you do but it's not our way.'
Swiss national Oliver Fricker, 32, an IT consultant working in Singapore, was convicted late last month of breaking into SMRT...

Is it really what it is?
Is it really punishment?
What if the perp (to use a TV cop term) also happen to be a perv?
For example, what if he enjoyed getting a cane across his arse? Would the Judge sentence him to have his fingernails pulled out since a caning would be hot and kinky and therefore not a punishment?

He arrived in Zurich and got arrested: | Quote:
A spokesman for the Zug cantonal police said he was suspected of having sprayed trains in a number of cantons since 2002, causing a total of about SFr200,000 ($200,680) worth of damage.
