The other day I got a letter from "Der Stadtverwaltung Winterthur" as a final act of my bike (motor cycle that is) accident in June.

The letter was just to inform me that since I did not press charges against the other person involved in the accident within the 3 month window, the case is to be considered closed.

In the letter both parties were mentioned by name of course but the nationality of the other dude (he is from Serbia and Montenegro) was also mentioned but mine not (Danish).

I am thinking.......is this racism? Does the official Swiss i.e. in this case the Stadtverwaltung Winterthur, thinks that is worth mentioning because he is from eastern Europe, or what could the purpose be?

Maybe I am thinking too much
Quite to the contrary, at the times when authorities and the media did NOt mention the nationality, the "natives" always thought "it must be a foreigner" but now, very very often, it becomes clear that the folks involved are Swiss nationals

How on earth did your detective skills come to this conclusion from something like the nationality of someone mentioned on a piece of paper? SHeesh

No, its not. Its not even close, get over it.

Re: Is this racism?

Like Economisto says I think that it may be to do with the fact that you could bring charges against him and that he was not Swiss. Stadtverwaltung Winterthur were always great with me- no racism at all, but then I am Swiss. My husband was hauled in when it came to the naming of our child as he had chosen a non-Swiss name and they had to know that I was in agreement. It very much depends on the individual handling your matters, that goes for the police too, but generally they were very patient with us and other foreigners. -much better than some other Kantons!

Good question.

To be more specific. There was a letter with an explanation and a form for me to sign in order to confirm that I now know, that the case is closed.

It was on the form his name and nationality were mentioned.

When I read it I was thinking at first "Oh...that's why he didn't obey the rules and consequently denied to have any guild what so ever in hitting me."

Um....am I the racist now?
I started a thread discussing guilds, can the EF start a Swiss internet forum guild?

By the way, just out of interest (don't have to answer), did you pass you motorcycle tests in Switzerland or did you get your home license transferred?

Because his nationality was mentioned and mine not. Neither of us are Swiss so why not mention both?

Not any more, but there was a country called Serbia-Montenegro, and this chap might have entered Switzerland and got his permit while that country existed, so that is what is written on his documents.

You've heard of "Search", presumably?

No doubt you'll go back and replace it with "Never mind, never mind"...

True, the other day, after a domestic dispute in a Geneva suburb that ended tragically (a man killed his wife then himself in front of their 4 children), I noticed that Tribune de Geneve reported that the husband was from Vaud and the wife from Geneva. Vaudois are also foreigners, n'est-ce pas?

Valid possibilities to your original question was given. People even pointed out that you probably know your own nationality. And yet you're still asking why a few posts up ...

I'm with Lex and Nil on this one.

That did sound much more racist than the nationality of the guy on the paper... But I prefered to call it judgemental.... oups!

Too much hassle (accidents, fake accidents, crashes, general fraud).
If you read 20min, you can see that every report about a car accident comes with age and nationality of the people involved.
In Germany, this information is usually tactfully omitted. But of course, every insurance-company who wants to stay alive knows their statistics.

I always found it funny that they almost religiously steate the age and the nationality of many newspaper stories. However for law breakers it is forbidden to show the rectangular area on the face surronding the eyes.

This is normal in UK, American, Canadian papers too. Often they mention the town of origin, esp in the UK.
