Armed man entered Maternity Ward at Hirslanden Zurich

Gunned man entered Maternity Ward at Hirslanden Zurich. Sorry in German

How terrible this must be to the moms there, considering their fragile moment of life.

Re: Gunned man entered Maternity Ward at Hirslanden Zurich

Oh goodness!!

We were there (in the maternity wards) around 8pm last night and there was no sign of anything like this happening/happened! In fact I was even commenting to my husband what a quiet place Hirslanden is! Maybe I am just oblivious - which is a good thing in this case.

Crikey! Right on my door step this one. Not the sort of thing you would imagine happening here although there are clinics galore including a psychiatric hospital so we do see some more 'eccentric' characters around.

Those poor women, glad nothing worse happened. Slightly concerning that they haven't caught him.

Re: Armed man entered Maternity Ward at Hirslanden Zurich

He tried to get in to the maternity ward upstairs from where I am now - actually I was upstairs last week, glad they moved me downstairs. My husband went for a coffee to the coffee shop upstairs last night just after or during and saw armed police, he thought they were maybe doing a training exercise

Anyway I asked the nurses today and it was just a drug addict needing a fix of morphine, the nurse was shook up fending him off against the door - don't think they found him yet. They searched all the wards last night upstairs. First I
heard of it was from a friend later in the evening from the news and the armed guards being seen but there was no commotion and it was all very calm

Glad you're ok Nicky, and congrats to you and bubs.
I'm not surprised this man didn't get past the nurses, the Nurse Matron there is a force to be reckoned with!

I take it the hospital has no or little security?

Must be a call now then for at least the system they have in good hotels, card entry only for upper floors of hospitals..

I believe that they call that a "knee-jerk reaction". Thankfully I left all those behind in the UK...

It does have a stationed security, but as with any hospital here (dunno about ultra private ones) anyone can walk in and around the main areas. Some maternity wards you can even get up to the window to see the babies without anyone thinking you're anything other than a visitor, as is the case with Hirslanden.

i hope we don't see fort knocks culture here in hospitals. Its refreshing how relaxed it is here. The birthing area is however locked and only has card entry.

By the way it was a plastic gun but the lovely nurses on duty were very shook up over it

This is true but even the baby room has key card entry that us parents and the nurses have access too. But as you say visitors can have a peek at the babies through the window

Yes, that is correct. I'm not calling for pistoled security guards stationed outside the maternity ward, but I found it a little too relaxed here how anyone can walk off the street into the maternity wards without registering in with hospital reception, without special access cards (i.e. visitor cards), etc. Kind of eerie.
