According to this article from last year, Schengen has become a useful crime fighting tool:

Swiss reflect on Schengen progress one year on

I'm surprised.
Me too. Thanks for link. (off to read the good, yet surprising news).

Although I have heard reports of increased home invasion robberies, burglaries, petty crime and drug dealing in towns bordering France. It looks like the increase started before Shengen/Dublin was implemented. The SIS system does not seem to have an effect on these kinds of crime on this side of the border.

It started in 1991, when the Romanians were allowed to travel. Sure, this does not mean that THE Romanians are criminals, it means however that Romania had a hidden crime problems for years which then affected the rest of Europe

Re: Border Police discouraged in Kanto Zürich!

What might perhaps be more interesting/relevant will be to read a follow-on article next month entitled "Swiss reflect on Schengen progress two years on"

Why ? What exactly is the connection ? Switzerland is to introduce legislation which has come into force in Germany several years ago. Not too long ago, German specialists expressed their thoughts that Switzerland interpreted Schengen matters far too liberally.

I love the word "delinquents". It should be used more

With Schengen, this is basically possible in every Schengen country.
But few take it as serious as the Swiss, it seems.
I was parked up at a motorway service station in France earlier this year (at least 100 km from the Swiss and German borders) and the French customs pulled up to search my van. They were very nice about it, but also very thorough.

No, but they were slightly bemused.
