Taking UK Car to Switzerland temporarily

Hello, I am moving from the UK to a new job in Fribourg in the new year. I'll need a car initially to help me flat hunt, so was thinking of doing the following; drive over to Fribourg and use my car (with UK plates), for about 5-6 weeks. A friend will then fly over, drive my car back and sell it in the UK. Does anyone know if it would be legal to drive the car in CH for this short period of time, or if I would need to tell any authorities? Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Re: Taking UK Car to Switzerland temporarily

You can drive on UK plates no problem upto 12 months; as you are not planning on importing it should be fine; as long as you have insurance etc then no problem. Remember you will need all the usual bulbs; sticker; triangle etc.

You may want to consider winter tyres?? Stickers on the headlights.

Re: Taking UK Car to Switzerland temporarily

Search function ("registering car foreign plates") revealed these hits which may help:

12 months register car rule

Driving foreign registered cars in Switzerland - for Swiss domiciled persons

Car insurance for a UK car, not intending to import

Car import - still confused...

Key point that seemed to come up was that the car needs to be fully legal by UK standards (e.g. taxed, MOTed etc), however, for the short while you will have it here, I guess that won't apply to you.

Good luck with the move.

The key thing is insurance - you will need to check that your insurance company are happy with the arrangement.

Re: Taking UK Car to Switzerland temporarily

Normally UK insurance companies do not insure cars fully comp for more than 3 months abroad. However I had an old L-reg Rover and my insurance company said you I could keep it out of the country as long as I wanted and it'll be covered third party only. First thing is to call your insurance company and let them know the details. You may also want to think about European break-down cover too. You don't have to tell Switzerland, France, etc. that you are entering the country with your car. Checkout this too: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...ance/DG_067624

Check this post: [Import] Bring car to Switzerland?

I'm planning to do the same as you and I wrote to the Federal Customs office regarding this. They basically replied it's not necessary to declare the car if you plan on keeping it in Switzerland for less then a year. If you plan on keeping it for more then one year then you've got to declare it on entry.
