| | | Aer Lingus are you kidding me?
Ok so i try to book tickets for the OH birthday in May (im well organised).
We want to go to Dublin and Easyjet and Ryanair dont offer the route (Geneva - Dublin)
I check the Aer Lingus page and find 23CHF pp one way or 46 return. Great!
So i begin to book. Final price for 2 people 314CHF!! Emm no thanks! Same with ebookers.
Anyone knows of a cheap(er) way to fly to Dublin?
Cheers!

Am I that out of touch? 160 bucks per person from Switzerland to Ireland seems pretty good to me. I regularly buy tickets to cph and back for more than 200, sometimes 250, and that seemed like a decent price to me...

Fantastic price! Good for you!
It's no longer the flights itself that are so expensive but all those mandatory taxes, etc.

I flew to Dublin from Zurich and Basle (and Germany) with Ryanair and Aer Lingus one way / both ways / combination of boths several times and I agree that the price offered is good. The problem with Geneva (or Zurich) is that the airport taxes are very high. So you end up paying more for taxes than for the actual flight! But Aer Lingus offer a good service. You don't pay anything for luaggage (at least as far as I remember), you get food and drinks and they are very nice if you're luaggage is a "little" over the limit after some cheap shopping in Dublin....To close a long story short I would take the tickets and enjoy a great time in Dublin (I envy you!)

i hate the scenario too. if i want to go home i pay a fortune and if my family want to visit me they pay even more. the price per person doesn't seem much, but when you take a family of 3-5 into account we can pay close to 1000 for a visit. It is now possible for me to only visit my family once or twice a year. Ryanair used to fly from basel but the route was cancelled because ryanair wouldn't pay the taxes!!! i miss my family so much in ireland. You should also check out swiss as they fly from zurich to dublin too, and although its rare, they do sometimes work out cheaper than aer lingus depending on your dates.. enjoy your trip |

you also have the option of driving, which many people don't...

Skyscanner is my first port of call in cheap airline tickets. It doesnt always have the "regular" airlines so for that I would use kayak.com.
A big advantage of Skyscanner is for holiday planning because you can fly to "any country" to choose the cheapest or "at any time" to choose the cheapest day.
For example for your search, have a look at http://www.skyscanner.net/flights/gv...ml?charttype=1
Doesn't look like you have many options for this route (though I would look at Kayak) but its a useful site nonetheless

we looked into that and it costs almost the same amount to drive coz of the ferry crossings..
well actually not really, it can be 800pp or it can be 3000pp, it doesn't matter.. point is we can't afford to go more than once a year.. sin sin.

Food and drinks are available at separate costs on the flight.
gata, make sure the point about baggage is super clear when you are booking the tickets. You dont want to end up paying for extra baggage. Price wise, it seems extremely reasonable! Enjoy!

A return flight Geneva/Dublin = 2382 km.
At CHF 157 per person = less than .07c per km. That’s really cheap travel ! |

I used Aer Lingus a few times when they had the Gatwick - Zurich route. Like most of the budget airlines, they add many surcharges to what seems to be a bargain price.
Having said that, their overall prices were competetive and the service was fine.
Swiss show an all inclusive price. This may seem expensive at first, but can be cometetive on some occasions. Depending on the day you fly, they may be as cheap as Aer Lingus.

Yes you will have to pay extra for check in baggage. We're flying with Aer Lingus in March (Zurich - Dublin) and though I can't recall the amount you do have to pay for checked in bags as an extra. I also think that like easyjet and Ryan Air it's cheaper to pay for the bags online in advance rather than at the airport when you check in.

I settled on Zurich as it is much cheaper. Having a Swiss pass and plenty of time to spare, the rail journey isn't a problem. My return flight with Swiss is £127 (About CHF190). I could have got a cheaper deal with Easyjet but have lost faith in them after so many delayed flights.

That is as cheap as it will get, we flew in May this year over to Switzerland at a similar price.. but one way, with 2 people.
So take it,its the best they will do.
Or go to Germany /France and take a Ryanair flight but given your location, driving up with the car will add up to the cost also.
Calculate how much it would be driving up with the car ( petrol, tunnel, boat) and see what it ad's up too, you need 2 days but it can be done, did it twice and had great fun

AerLingus.ie is a pain to book a flight with (each screen is an adventure as it adds an unforeseeable amount to the headline price of a ticket).
Swiss fly the ZRH-DUB route and we have used them in preference to Aer Lingus for the last two years. If you book in advance, expect to pay about CHF 200 per person return (rising if you choose peak times). The online system gives one price for your ticket, including taxes and luggage. And you get a small chocolate every time...

Taxes in Dublin airport are massive (they had to fund a new terminal which has just opened) which is why the price jumps so much. On top of that the Irish government also add a tax to fly into/out of the country. It's a right pain.
