Re: Bike Maps

I don't know about Winterthur but you could try Esterbauer (www.esterbauer.com). They publish bike maps all over Europe and some of them are in English.

Additionally, go to your local Stauffacher bookstore and they will be chockablock full of maps (many languages) in the travel section.

Re: Bike Maps

Oops, I just saw that Esterbauer doesn't have much stuff for Switzerland. In that case, I second the other option: walk to the local bookstore and look in the travel section (assuming you're in Switzerland already).

Re: Bike Maps

If you want paved roads, you can get the Veloland Schweiz maps which are available in most bookstores. www.veloland.ch

If you are looking for mountainbike routes then the singletrail maps www.singletrailmap.ch are a good starting point. The Züri Oberland one has a little bit around Winterthur but if you look at the map you can see which one suits you best. They are available in most good bikeshops and some bookshops.

Hope this helps.

Re: Bike Maps

If you have a GPS then check out gps-touren.ch. The site hosts a large collection of routes that you can plug into your GPS and follow along. I've used it many times to find trails that I would never have found on my own with a map. cheers, chris

Re: Bike Maps

You should be able to go into your local post office or commune building and ask for the bike maps of your area. (maybe even the gas stations)

Does anyone know if there is a list of stockists for these maps. I'm sure in the past the link above gave a list of stockists, but now only a link to an online shop. I'd buy online but need it by Thursday night.

Re: Bike Maps

I know that veloplus stock them, the closest of their stores to you would be in Wetzikon.

Re: Bike Maps

For the less advanced rider: The veloland Schweiz booklets that have already been recommended are just great. You can get them at any bookstore, and they contain overviews, detailed maps, descriptions with information on local sights, bike friendly hotels, bike shops, etc., and profiles so that you know whether it is paved or offroad and up or down. I bought most of them and do at least one route per summer, cut up into several pieces.

Enjoy

Re: Bike Maps

Answering my own question..... I found that the Luethy bookstore at Glattzentrum (Wallisellen ZH) stocks the full range. They also stock a comprensive range of standard cycling maps and the detailed hiking maps (1:25,000). All good for the coming seasons.

Other suppliers with the full range of single trail maps include Backyard Bikes and Veloplus.

At chf25 to chf30 each, Swiss maps have taken the place of my previous CD buying habits.

Re: Bike Maps

I wasn't impressed with the singletrail maps. They are not very clear and the colour seperation is atrocious. They are of the "pen and ink" stylee of which the swiss are so fond...

They had these at Leuthy books, and they looked like a great starter resource. There is also a range of COOP sponsored "wander" books that look great for family and easy hikes in the same display area.

I agree Dave. The problem might be with that waterproof paper that they use. Unfortunately you're paying for the MTB single trail knowledge. Much prefer the proper paper hiking and cycling maps. I usually use GPS route downloaded off the web, but we are exploring some new regions.

cycling maps

hello all, some of you may know this site ... www.bikely.com but I just discovered it...

for those that don't know it the site includes cycling routes and descriptions made by individuals and you can create your own favourite maps ( membership is free ) or , as I have done , map out prospective rides. I've not fully investigated all options yet but from what I have seen the maps are quite detailed.. right down to farm tracks in my area.

enjoy !!
