Fahrzeugausweis - Vehicle registration document

Is it secure to send someone a copy of your car's registration license? Someone asked for it to check more info about the car, but I felt I shouldn't do that, so I suggested to answer any reasonable questions. Can the data be used for some illegal scam?

It felt like these spams, that ask for your bank account details and personal information

Re: Fahrzeugausweis - Vehicle registration document

Wouldn't a photocopy / scanned copy suffice ?

What does this mean on a bill from Road Traffice Office?

Re: Fahrzeugausweis - Vehicle registration document

It should remain and be permanently with the vehicle to which it applies.
If you get stopped by the plods and can't show it for your vehicle, you'll end up deep in it. Don't get conned.

Even the OCN are happy with a scanned copy, that I recently needed to get a day plate to pick up a trailer.

Re: Fahrzeugausweis - Vehicle registration document

Yes, that is what was asked for. But you don't hand over your vehicle registration document to someone else without finalizing sale, right? "Possession of this is proof that you own the car"

So, it didn't feel right to give away even the scanned copy, in case the info might be used for something else.

Re: Fahrzeugausweis - Vehicle registration document

When in doubt don't. May be ask them to meet you to show the registration etc.

A colleague/friend of mine was about to get scammed, the very next day he posted his car advert.
The interested buyer apparently claimed being from the French part and was on a holiday then. He asked for the account and other details so that he could close the deal immediately!
They exchanged few phone calls in the beginning!
The offering price of the car was not that cheap and the whole episode looked very fishy, the buyer being in “Nigeria” for holidays and blah blah.
So scams like this do exist! Just be cautious.

Oh, I got mails from two different people, who worked with UN in Cote d'Ivoire, and wanted to transfer money after speaking to the manager without even seeing the car. He asked for my personal data , of course

Re: Fahrzeugausweis - Vehicle registration document

Did you advertise on Ricardo or Car4you? I had a scammer, said he was French and sent me a copy of his French ID .

Do NOT give him your car documents. He can change ownership easily.

Cover up the Swiss numberplate number and photocopy or scan it.

Re: Fahrzeugausweis - Vehicle registration document

Yep, it was advertised on Ricardo and AutoScout24.

The one who asked for copy of the documents said she was working in Germany, and will be in CH in 2 weeks, and asked for the documents (which made me a bit more suspicious).

And when I declined due to 'security reasons', I think she got a bit offended, and was like 'what can I do with the documents?!?'. So, I said she's welcome to see the car and documents when in CH, and meanwhile I can provide information about the car that is relevant.

So, not sure if I were being paranoid, but I guess it is best to be on the safe side at cost of losing an interested buyer...

Not sure if you are paranoid - I have no idea what one could potentially do with a copy. On the other hand: When I drove company cars in Germany which were long-term rental cars, we never had the "real paper" with us, only a copy of them in the glove box. Not sure if this was legal, but the cops aparently accepted it... so a copy of your papers could possibly help a smart thieve to transport a car.

On the less paranoid side: If the buyer was not only working in Germany, but actually German, I understand the question: German car papers are not as pointless as Swiss ones: Every owner a car ever had is listed there with name and address, plus the kilometers they drove. So it is a much clearer record and you know who drove that car for how long. It is therefore the most natural thing to ask for when you want to buy a car.

Here in Switzerland you have no idea and I personally had the impression that there are far more "only one owner cars" on offer than in Germany. Maybe because you cannot prove the seller a liar...

<ALARM BELLS>

Frankly I would not even answer any enquiries from outside Switzerland.

Why would someone from Africa want a car from Switzerland when they are going to work in Germany??

If an offer sounds too good to be true it is...

Re: Fahrzeugausweis - Vehicle registration document

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I have a question.
A nice EFer sold me his bike, he gave me the Fahrzeugausweis that had been terminated (says UNGULTIG ab...). My questions are: a) is this enough proof of ownership? and b)how do I register it to my name, so far i only have an L permit

Thanks+

No problem, my daughter registered hers before even getting a learners permit.

Just get insurance (you will need the old registration), then bring the old registration to the motor vehicles office.

Re: Fahrzeugausweis - Vehicle registration document

I've always used AXA-Wintherthur.

Liability insurance depends on the size of the engine, and how long you've been accident free, partial or full casco also depends on the original (new) cost of the vehicle.

Do you have a car? If so, and have a bonus, they should be able to apply that to new motorcycle insurance.

Fire and theft.

A 150cc shouldn't be more than CHF 300 or so with no bonus. One of my bikes is a 250cc, I pay a bit over 100 on that one, but I'm at 35%.
