Car Painting without Getting Ripped-Off!

Hi All - Have been following the forum for quite some time now but this is the fist time I am actually reaching out to you! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Need to get the front and rear bumper of my car repainted and the dealer where I got it from quoted CHF3,000.- (Cheeky!).

Any ideas on where I can get this done for a reasonable price in Lausanne or Gevena?

Also thinking of buying a "new" used car in some months and would like to have it completely repainted. Probably my normal dealer would need more than the purchase price to get that done

Many Thanks for Any Help/Input!

Cheers!

Stelios

Re: Car Painting without Getting Ripped-Off!

If you want the whole car changed what about www.c-y-c.ch

Full car starts at 2,900chf - which isn't too bad.

Re: Car Painting without Getting Ripped-Off!

Wow !! Thanks dodgyken!

First observation: These guys will actually repaint the whole car for the price the guy in the area wanted to spray the bumpers (got to love it!).

You think they will do my bumpers for a reasonable price (apprx. CHF300?).

Would rather not to drive all the way to ZH for this one though!

Anyone know an equivalent service in French-speaking CH?

You could take it to France and get the bus and train back home.

Google for "Carrosserie Annecy"

Re: Car Painting without Getting Ripped-Off!

I am also looking to get some scratches polished or painted for cheaper then most garages quoted (1200 CHf). In Zürich or near by ?

Anyone ever found a place to dose it for cheap

Re: Car Painting without Getting Ripped-Off!

Indeed would not pay 1200 for that. 1 year ago I had some serious damage (structural) done and got it fixed for 1500. How about just doing a touch-up yourself with some silver paint. Maybe you could ask your dealer/garage for the colour code?

Buy a paint-it-yourself kit or use some colorful crayons

Re: Car Painting without Getting Ripped-Off!

What about going to Germany for it? Should be loads cheaper. Or if you fancy a vacation in Romania I can recommend some good places which charge ~150eur for body element (bumper, door, hood etc) and ~600eur for the whole car

Looks to me like you could remove these scratches with 'Brasso' Wikipedia reference-linkhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brasso

Man, you got THAT right. ES paint jobs looked like they were done by a blind man with a 6-inch used bristle brush. They were absolutely crap.

When it comes to paint jobs, you get what you pay for. It is not easy to do properly. If you looked at the video, you could see that the guy painting the car made one of the cardinal sins of car painting: you must always stop spraying before the end of the stroke to 'feather' the paint. Otherwise, you end up with a thick bead at the end of the stroke.

It was too funny.... They just painted over EVERYTHING... Dirt, holes, etc. If you were lucky, they hosed down the vehicle before painting...

Re: Car Painting without Getting Ripped-Off!

the thing with cheap paint jobs is they look cheap, not so bad if your car is a 10yr old wrecker but not so good if its worth a bit.

I've painted a few cars in my time and 99% of the effort and time is in the prep before, and the polishing after, the actual painting takes no time at all.

before you get all excited about the bargain rate I'd check out a few of there other jobs first.

Are they actaually going to repair, prep and spray, or just do a blow overs. Blow overs are just paint over whats there, little prep work, no undercoat etc fine if you are going to sell the car but crap if you are going to keep it, the paint will pretty soon start to come off.

Also paint matching is an art in its self, especially if you have metallic paint, a cheap job you'll be able to spot a mile away, they need to blend the new into the old.

just my 2p's worth

let us know how you get on

Valid points.
But still, 1200?!

(And they wonder why more & more people go over the boarder for car stuff.
I just had my clutch & fly wheel replaced on my A6 in Germany for €1500 and he did some other stuff he found for free whilst he was in there. Cheapest quote in ZH was 3700Sfr).

Bump - anyone have any more experience with this Colormagic GmbH?
Anything else in ZH or Germany (close to ZH)?

The SO managed to scratch the body around the right rear wheel...
