Selling the car

I will be selling my car in a few months, and want to clarify a couple of things.

I noticed some people selling their cars in this forum already have a quote from a garage - normally I would have thought garages only buy cars as a trade-in..? Is it possible to go to any garage and offer it for sale?

The car will be due its MFK about a month after I leave. Would it be in my best interest for selling-pirposes to get it done before selling it? There is a garage near me in Germany which offers this service for 49 euro, so unless anyone advises against it, I would go there. I got my CH-Abgaswartung there last week without issue.

Other than getting to grips with the handover of registration, is there anything else I should consider?

How can a German garage do the MFK in Switzerland?

Are you sure? If so please let us know the name?
My car was serviced last week in Germany, and the guy said he couldn't do the MFK or emissions tests as had to be done in CH.

Maybe they drive it over to a friendly CH garage?

Re: Selling the car

Yeah positive. There was a handful of Swiss cars there getting theirs done too.

The name is Bahlinger Stop + Go Garage on Colmarerstrasse, directly opposite McDonalds.

http://www.auto-bahlinger.de/

The place is big, and busy, and the guy who I dealt with speaks OK English.

He did the check onsite, then had to go away for 10-15 mins to get the stamp or certificate or something.

Re: Selling the car

This can't be true. The MFK is not done by a garage, it is done at an official test centre that serves both Basel-Stadt and Basel-Land. Details here:
http://www.baselland.ch/Motorfahrzeu....273487.0.html
http://www.mfk.bs.ch/

It's possible that the garage does a mock MFK or takes the car to the MFK testing centre. It's not like the UK where a garage can be licensed to do the MOT. Anyway, I'm selling my car soon too and would be interested to know what people think--get the test done earlier or not bothering.

Recent edit: Actually, thinking about it... it could be that the guy is confused with the term MFK, it's German for "vehicle inspection/check". Maybe the confusion is with the term. The German garage thinks that you're just wanting them to check over the car, while in Switzerland, it actually means a test/exam of the car with real consequences.

For sure it will attract more people with a new MFK. However I was under the impression they summoned you to get the new certificate? It's not just something you can get done with 9 months left to run, I believe.

Exactly--you are summoned. At least in the cantons of Basel-Stadt/Land and Zurich.

To be honest, I don't know the exact details of what they offer for the MFK. Maybe they do bring it to the centre, or maybe its just a pre-test kind of thing.

So going back to my original post - If I sell the car in August, and the MFK is due in September, I can't get it done earlier to help sell the car? I have to wait for this summoning by Basel stadt?

I believe you can get it done earlier. In Zurich you can. Check out Basel-Stadt police website.

Go to a second hand car dealer. You won't get as much as privately, but it's quick and easy. While you can negotiate a bit, generally it's book price - regardless of MFK or whatever.

How do you find out the book price?

Here is the EU Glasses pricing www.eurotax.ch

Look at others for sale on autoscout to gauge rough asking prices; an independent however will never give you close to this. As far as MFK, does it need one are there any faults issues with the car also has it ever been in an accident or damaged?

No it's in good condition (its a 2003 citroen), fully serviced, low km's. I would describe it as one of the better condition ones of its age. Not I will raise the price on that point, but hopefully it should make selling it easier.

Thanks all for various inputs.

The consequences being that the date is entered into the Swiss computer and stamped on the grey-card.

According to the web-site, it's a pre-test.

Anyway, you do not need to wait, you can go to the motor vehicles office and ask for an appointment, usually takes a few days to get one, depending how busy they are. Garages and others who sell used cars do it all the time, and I did it for motorcycles several times.

Re: Selling the car

My car is just over 4 years old. We had the Abgaswartung done after 4 years because the garage told us too (is it every 4 years?). But we have not been called for an MFK test and I am trying to sell the car privately...is this OK?

Re: Selling the car

Yes. Your buyer might demand a new MFK but it sounds like they have not.

Emissions is completely separate from the MFK. Do ensure you have the white paper for emissions with the car as well as the sticker.

If it's 4 years old then it's unlikely that he will need the ABGAS test.

ABGAS is every 2 years. I think you're confused with MFK aka experisť?

They did away with the ABGAS for newer cars with OBD since the first of January.

Quite right as well!
