How much should I spend on my first car

I just got my Swiss license a couple of days ago (coneverted from Malaysian lincense) and now I'm considering buying a car. I have been looking around to get some idea of the price and quality and I'm not sure what's the kind of money I should spend to get a reliable second hand car. I don't have unlimited cash, so I have to be very selective. I have of max of 13K to spend. Any suggestion?

You will have approx 10k and the rest will go on insurance and other expenses. So spend 10k. Do you need to be told ?

autoscout24 will tell you what that will buy you.

The basic guideline is that a car should cost no more than 6 months salary. The fact that you have 13K to spend should not be really considered at the moment. More important is to look at what kind of permit you have and when this will run out - would leaasing be more effective? Also whether to buy a car at all. What about mobility? ie how much use do you have for it?

Re: How much should I spend on my first car

Good advise from Richard.

Also, remember to add in the cost of somewhere to park the thing, where I live that could be CHF 120/month.

Before you buy, figure how much it will cost you per year and how much Mobility, taxi, train, hire car you could have for those money.

If you still want a car (there can be good & valid reasons), buy something slightly dull and possibly japanese (Toyota Corolla springs to mind), as they are likely to give you many years of trouble-free driving even at CHF 5000.-

The advantage is that it is cheap to insure, and you could even decide to drom fully comp insurance.

The best car I have had was a Honda that had done 220000km - when I got it!

Have fun

Martin

Re: How much should I spend on my first car

Good points from Sorensen and Richard.

Also, look at the size of the thing. The garage places are only not expensive, but can be very small and hard to get into. I for example am limited to a maximum middle sized car, since the extrance curve to our garage is so narrow. You can drive a Passat in there but are guaranteed to hit the walls at some point. The colours of the rainbow are visible if you know what I mean.

If you are on a budget, I would recommed going for something with more than 100tkms on it. That seems to be the mileage the Swiss consider the car as finished. After that you can still do 200tkms with little trouble. Being the "end user" of an automobile usually pays out.

Just go to any garage. There are price tags on the cars. Put aside CHF2k for insurance, CHF1k for winter tyres (in few months for sure!). Now you have CHF10k left. You could still drive a BMW if you wish.. . Terima kasih.

And double that if you have to pay for parking at work.

Excellent advice from the others.
