Someone damaged my car but I have their registration number

I've tried to search this issue but can't find this specific problem, please point me in the right direction if it's been dealt with before.

Someone let their supermarket trolley crash into my car today and broke the break light. I didn't see it happen but when I returned to my car a very nice man was waiting for me with the registration number of the person who did it. He also gave me his name and mobile number as the witness.

I called my insurance company who said I'm up for 300Chf in excess for the claim. I told them I have the registration number of the person who did it but the insurance company rep was vague and said just to list all this in the declaration, then maybe I can claim the 300Chf back from the person who did the damage. I asked if I needed to go file a report with the police and they said I should ask the police if this is needed. SO insurance company not exactly the most helpful.

I have heard that I may have to pay a fee to file a police report, and then if I don't find this woman and have her pay the excess, I'm just racking up even more costs.

I looked at the thread about finding people's details through their plate numbers but this seems to deal with getting your own info taken off rather than finding someone else.

Anyway, I'm thoroughly pissed off with this woman, who I had seen when first parking (I waited for her to get out of her car before I pulled in). I even smiled at the silly cow. I saw her in the store as well, and smiled again only for her to smash my light and then drive off. My faith in humanity is only maintained thanks to the good samaritan who waited to give me her licence plate number.

Anyone know my chances of getting her to pay for what she did?

Your insurance company is not the Zurich, is it? I have found them to be super helpful.

Anyway, reporting the accident to the police is free. You will have to pay something like CHF300 to have the light repaired anyway if you don't claim.

Assuming you fully comp. and have some sort of no claims protection, fill out the insurance claim form. Report it to the police and give them the registration of the other vehicle and the details of the independent witness. If i is a Swiss car, they will find it.

Then sit back and wait for the insurance company to tell you where to get the repair done...

Online Car Number Search [e-index]

Above is the thread with details of how to look up someone's car registration (doesn't work in all cantons though).

Sorry to hear about your incident. Good luck getting it sorted.

If it's just the light cover, you will probably find a new one on Ebay.de for under 100chf, one for my Porsche was 38euro. Hardly worth loosing sleep if it's minor.

Re: Someone damaged my car but I have their registration number

Thanks Abfab. Insurance company is Vaudoise although I think they're probably all the same. I'm off to the police station now to file a report.

I'm thinking the light is going to cost more the 300CHf unfortunately.

I really do not know why the insurance company is giving you the run around. If you have park place accident coverage. (park Schaden) all you have to do is to take your car to a garage and they will handle everything with your insurance company. This is what I did when my car was damaged in the parking lot. Good thing about this is that your insurance coverage or premium is in no way affected.

Re: Someone damaged my car but I have their registration number

Just to update, I went to the police yesterday but apparently, since it was a trolley that hit my car and not the other person's vehicle, the police don't get involved. I have to rely on the insurance company to track down the culprit. I'm not sure how motivated they will be as they know I have to pay up regardless. I'm talking to them about it now. The very helpful police officer said that if the insurance company gave me trouble I could contact him again and he would try to help.

Also, for Vaud residents, the police officer said that while he could see the details of the owner of the vehicle whose registration I was given by the witness, the police are not permitted to give any of this info to me. So seems Vaud has better privacy protection than some other cantons.

That's not true:

In the canton of Vaud, it is not possible to obtain the coordinates of a vehicle owner in a directory on the internet or via sms.

SAN communicate the name and address of a person solely on written and reasoned request, with a fee of CHF 20 .-.

Well, it kinda is true since according to the sticky on this thread, some cantons allow you to type in a vehicle registration number on a search site and find the name and address of the owner of the vehicle. You certainly can't do that in Vaud.

I am glad to see though, that I could request the details of the person who damaged my car, by writing and telling the authorities why I need it (and paying the 20Chf fee). I'll probably have more success by doing this via my insurance agent, I would think. Thanks for posting the link.

Dont underestimate the costs.
In February, I had to replace a lightbulb in my car. I could not do it myself, as the bumper had to be removed. Costs: CHF 956,-

Doc.

Re: Someone damaged my car but I have their registration number

So, I feel compelled to officially apologise for what I previously said about my insurance company. Received an email from them last night to say they had contacted the police officer I spoke to about the incident, had received the name of the perpetrator from him, and were sending the person a letter to request payment for the damage.

They asked me to go and get an estimate for replacing the light and contact them again when I have it.

I should know better by now, but I am often still surprised by Swiss efficiency.

Todays mood: impressed.

Re: Someone damaged my car but I have their registration number

In the UK once someone witnessed a couple reverse their car into my brand new car door. I told the police and they said a car park is private property and thus it was a civil claim I had to persue. After slouthing for their address, I checked out where they lived. Slum city. My lawyer sent letters galore but no joy and the advice was suck it up with the insurance rather than chase them through the courts.

I still can't believe the police's comments so be sure to let us know if such matters are handled differently here please.

Jaguar S-Type from 2003 - had it done by Emil Frey in Altstetten.

The Lightbulb was CHF 211, then a Module for the lightbulb was CHF 200-something, the rest was Labor and mwst.

you did not have a "lightbulb" replaced, you had a complete HID unit replaced. As they have a substantial lifespan its normal they are tucked away. I would however have questioned the replacement of the bulb and the ignition unit, in 99% of cases its 1 or the other not both.

Yes, I had a feeling too, I was overcharged. But I do not have enough knowledge about the electric system in cars, that I could have challenged it.

Re: Someone damaged my car but I have their registration number

Hi Mel, Looks like you met one very nice guy ! This happened a while back to some friends of mine and they were also pleasantly surprised to find a paper slipped under the windshield indicating that a person had witnessed the parked car being smacked in to. The driver had just left.
The insurance did kick in and the naughty driver did have to pay up, so I do hope it will also work for you.

Wish I had had such luck, found my parked little car all scratched along the back fender this morning Nobody in sight.
