| | | Winter tyres- who fits them in Zurich?
Hi
Am thinking ahead about getting winter tyres put on my car- I can get them cheaper from a pal in the business but will it be difficult getting the tyres swapped over? Are there places in Zurich that will provide this service even though I have brought the tyres from elsewhere?
Many thanks

Go to almost any garage or tyre place with your winter tyres and they'll swap them over. Prices vary.

check out http://www.reifendirekt.ch/Montagepartner.html to see the prices for their partner garages. (this is a nice place to buy tyres online, have them sent to a partner garage, too)
note that there is extra charge per tyre if the rims need to be swapped, and some garages have hardware that support only up to certain rim diameter.
some also list prices to store/recycle the old tyres.

Costs me about a hundred Swiss Francs each time I get it done at the main dealer.
I keep thinking about getting a set of steel rims or another set of alloys so I could just jack the car up and change them myself.

Not the hardest job - but check the rules of your parking spot - they might not allow it.

Go to ATU in Germany, 10% of what you pay here and they are really precize. Also better to outline your car right away

Speaking of which, does Switzerland have a specific date by which such tires must be applied as in the Nordics? I can't imagine we get much snow down here in Zurich so I'm wondering if it's a moving date or if it's a countrywide mandate.

You get snow also in Zurich, In Germany its compulsory in the winter to have winter tires. BTW if temperatures are < 7 C it is always better and safer to use winter tyres so you should really make sure you have them

There's no official dates. General rule of thumb it's Oktober - Ostern.

| | | | | That's what I've done for years, although at the house in France where I have a garage to store them in and proper tools and equipment to do the job with minimum effort.
What's the car? I have a set I'm trying to get rid of a set from a Volvo V70 that I sold three years back. They're 15" steel rims, with 195/65R15 91 T tyres fitted, part worn Vredestein 'Snowtracks'. 5-stud pattern also suitable for use on Audis and VWs that I know of.
I'm going to put up a for sale ad, but as I saw this thread first I thought I'd mention them here anyway.

| | | | | | | This user would like to thank aSwissInTheUS for this useful post: | |

I am driving to the UK for teh first week of November - I have yet to decide which tyres I will use. I'll be checking the weather forecast and change at the most appropriate weekend.

I kept them, intending to use them on the Passat R36 I bought in 2008, but sadly the brake calipers on that are too big to fit the 15" rims over, so I had to buy a second set of alloys, with 17" rims (the summer ones are 18") instead.

And as for looks - ha! I always felt having steel rims on in Winter to be a style statement in itself. Both our cars now have two sets of alloys, which doesn't make quite the same point.
