Importing car from from the US and driving with US plates

I have seen many people saying "I drove the 1st year with my US plates".

How did you manage to keep those plates? My insurance company says that plates have to be returned to DMV, otherwise they can not discontinue my insurance (which does not cover driving in Europe)

Welcome to the forum, tailgunner. I think you have not received any responses because people are probably wondering a) why you wouldn't want to get Swiss plates and b) why you would consider driving without insurance.

You need Swiss plates and Swiss insurance. You live in Switzerland. I don't think anyone is really getting your question, i.e. keeping a US registered car with no insurance.

Re: Importing car from from the US and driving with US plates

I kept my plates for 10 months no problem as a) US insurance was not required in my state at that time, so no need to keep it, and b) I got Swiss insurance for my US plates (green card, so only liability, but it was free)

Why? Because that's how long it took to get Swiss plates back then (1987) on an imported vehicle.

Well, if it helps, I saw a guy driving around with his US plates AND new Swiss plates...

And we always got our plates back in NM (where I am originally from). I think that rule is state dependent and you should check with the state (not your insurance company) if you could have them back after all the logistical stuff is complete.

Now if you are trying to get away with not registering your vehicle in Switzerland for the first year (or at all), then... I can't help you there
