Commuting from Fribourg to Lausanne

Hi all,

Would like to know if anybody has experience with commuting by car from Fribourg to Lausanne for work? Distance wise it doesn't look too bad; 50-60km. How is traffic on the A12? It would also be possible to take country roads (#1). Work in Lausanne quite outside city unfortunately, so public transportation connections are slow (>1h), and car commuting would be much faster I presume.

Thanks so much!

Alternatively, take the A1. We always go this way to get to Lausanne or Geneva. I think it's less busy than the A12. You have to go cross-country to get to it from Fribourg though, joining it near Payerne.

Re: Commuting from Fribourg to Lausanne

Thanks PaddyG. Am curious to know what the commuting time is like during rush hours, i.e. <1 h? I assume traffic isn't very bad on that stretch, but I honestly don't know. Over 1 h and I wouldn't be very motivated to do it. Thanks!

Re: Commuting from Fribourg to Lausanne

According to Map Search the Payerne route is about ten kilometres further and takes an extra thirteen minutes. 1 hr 8 mins as opposed to 55 minutes. I think I'd try and check out the traffic maps in the morning rush hour when they show how heavy the traffic is to get more idea of that.

Re: Commuting from Fribourg to Lausanne

I know someone who commutes from Matran to the northern outskirts of Lausanne by car, I think it takes him about 45 minutes. I suppose you would need to add another ten minutes coming from Fribourg itself.

Not sure whether he stays on the motorway all the way down to Vevey or cuts across country from somewhere higher up.

Re: Commuting from Fribourg to Lausanne

We're based out at Misery-Courtion, between Fribourg and Avenches, and my husband drives in to Lausanne to work. Takes him 50mins to 1hr on the A1. Gets on motorway at Avenches and then straight into Lausanne. Motorway's not too bad, it's the non-motorway bits that can hold you up: slow moving vehicles or traffic lights.

Re: Commuting from Fribourg to Lausanne

Perfect, thanks stephen and medea for the replies! This gives me an idea. I was thinking of looking for places on the east side of Fribourg (Dudingen, german speaking, for family reasons). And I would also be commuting to north eastern outskirts of the city. So probably closer to 1h (15 km from Matran).

Re: Commuting from Fribourg to Lausanne

If you don't have to be in Fribourg itself, you could try looking for properties around Murten (Morat). It's German speaking and you have the option of either going slightly east from the town to pick up the A1 motorway or driving cross country on a good, pretty traffic free road to pick it up at Avenches.

Re: Commuting from Fribourg to Lausanne

Yes, was also considering Murten. Probably prettier than Dudingen and more sought after location, explaining what seem to be slightly higher properties prices, and less availability. Might make budget tighter for family of 4, but is an option.

Re: Commuting from Fribourg to Lausanne

Don't know what you're looking for exactly, but there are some apartments and a house for rent, min 4.5 rooms, in the Murten area for around CHF2,000 pm. Of course, you'll have to balance that against the extra wear and tear on the car and more frequent service bills so might be more than you're looking to pay.

Re: Commuting from Fribourg to Lausanne

That sounds reasonable. Yes, 4.5 room or larger, bigger than 110 m2. I'll look into it. Thanks for all the tips!

Re: Commuting from Fribourg to Lausanne

Think the biggest apartment I saw was 103m2, but there's a house at Courlevon on www.immoscout24.ch which is 120m2. It's a double family house, but have a look. Courlevon is only a few kilometres from Murten so still quite handy for motorway.

Oh yes, I would choose Murten over Düdingen. The latter is a bit of a $hithole tbh .

Re: Commuting from Fribourg to Lausanne

Thought it might be....we'll definitely need to check out the area. Just want to be fairly close to a "bigger" city:-)
