LHD BMW/Audi From Elsewhere.....

Hi guys I'm clearly a newbie here and probably a bit out of depth, but couldn't but not ask this General question.....

I'm not a big poster in Forums to be honest but couldn't help myself noticing that there seems to be a large number of people looking to buy a BMW or an Audi from the US in this forum and others. From my understanding (I'm currently based in the UK but relocating to CH for work reasons) that a US Spec car is very different and not worth the cost or pain etc to a comparable UK LHD supplied German car, which is exactly the same as a Local car purchased in CH or Germany???

Correct me if im wrong...as I'm looking into buying a BMW or Audi from the UK, a LHD before leaving thinking I'm saving a packet compared to Swissy/German prices, but also getting an EU Spec car too....so is a US car much cheaper??

Tony

Unless you have owned the car for 6 months BEFORE comming to CH you will be charged import duties on the car.

Re: LHD BMW/Audi From Elsewhere.....

You're unlikely to find a US LHD Audi in the UK.

Personally I would bring your UK car over but don't import it.

If you get on ok here then take it back to the UK and sell it (family are handy to enlist) then buy a CH/EU car here.

Switzerland is not for everyone, though most people get on here, and if you buy a new car and then leave you'll be taking a pasting on the money.

High prices mean high resale values, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Re: LHD BMW/Audi From Elsewhere.....

Hey guys thanks for replying,

Well the plan was to buy a LHD Tax Free car here in the UK and then take it to CH and pay the Taxes in CH as work should have my residency/rental sorted with the relocation package. Looking at the price difference it looks like a saving of around 35% like for like all in once registered and local Swiss Tax is paid!!!

Had some good guidance from BMW over here on what and how to do it, seems they sell a few to Europe, although probably end up with an Audi. But was keen to see what people may have thought on the US import option as opposed to a European or UK purchase....

Tony.

Re: LHD BMW/Audi From Elsewhere.....

If you are going to the trouble of importing from worldwide destinantions why not organise a purchase in germany they are way cheaper there then CH.

I would be very surprised if one in germany is 35% more then the UK when I know lots of people who actually import from germany to UK to save on purchase cost.

CH may be 35% more but I doubt that is the case in Germany which has the added advantage that you dont have to pay shipping which you would have to from USA.

Re: LHD BMW/Audi From Elsewhere.....

You know this is what I was thinking to, I remember my Father buying his VW from Germany 10 Years ago a RHD Golf GTi and saved a fair amount...but it appears to be the other way round now!! Checking the price/spec in Germany, UK, CH and the US the US and UK seem to be loads cheaper than CH and quiet a bit cheaper than Germany too. The US though doesn't do the model I'm looking for so can't compare 100% also they dont seem to be as well specced as the UK cars either!! So with the hassel of getting one over from the US I really dont see the point of it....think I'm mangaging to convince myself into it the more I talk about it!! Just supprised there's not about UK on here compared to buying a US car....feel like I'm missing something really obvious as the saving is around £14000 or 17000€ buying the car in the UK!!
