Buying a used car from a Private person: need advise on steps and price

Hello,

I am buying my first car in Switzerland and it is a used one from a Private person. Could you please tell me the steps that I need to take care of? Right now, we have only agreed on the sale and need to meet up to do the payment and exchange in a few days.

Also, please advise if you believe the price of CHF 41,000 is fair for an Audi Q5 3.0 TDI QUATTRO from 2009 with 128,000 kms (black exterior, black leather seats, GPS, open roof and other options...).

Thank you all for your help!

If you already have agreed to buy, it really doesn't matter now if the price is fair or not.

However, my better half has just bought a similar car i.e. same model and same year but only 35k km and with every possible extra gear in it incl. 10 year of warranty and service for approximately 14k more from an Audi dealer. So... Your price seems ok if you ask me.

seems a tad expensive, there are a couple on autoscout with slightly less km for 37k

eg

also from a dealer, so privately should be cheaper

There is a document with the details of the vehicle and owner (vehicle, type, spec, chassis number etc) that you will need to take to the Strassenverkehrsamthaus and get your name put on it and the previous owner taken off. At the same time you need to pick up your number plates/license plates (in Switzerland the number is for the owner rather than the car) as this is your first car so you probably don't already have those.

When you pick up the car you need to take along your new plates and put them on (usually no tools required, just hands).

You need to take out insurance, and the insurance company need to send the confirmation (electronic) to the Strassenverkehrsamthaus (or whatever it is) and only then will they give you the new plates.

For 41k you might want to ask the current owner to accompany you.

Thanks a lot! As I do not speak German, I have to say that I was struggling to find a "roadmap" on what to do next!

Too true Clarence! OP: It's always better to take the seller with you in case there is an auspicious jobs worth at the counter... that way the owner de registers the car then you step up and register it having your insurance in place and already sent through to the SVK by a nice company like ours and they will print a new "log book" and issue you the plates. They will then send you a nice bill for the plates, the car paper and the tax.
