Importing UK Motorbike with Aftermarket Modifications

Hi I've looked through various threads but am still confused about the import process.

My bike will be going through with a household goods shipment from the UK. It has been owned from new for 18 months, but has a range of modifications including exhaust and electronic fuel management changes.

I see different responses from people about border checks for conformity, but if they do check and find it does not conform do they just refer you to the canton powers to be for proof of conformity at a later date, or can they stop the bike entering the county until either paperwork is provided showing it conforms or even check you make all the necessary changes?

I'm unsure to the scope of what they do if they meet a bike that is not EC compliant at the border.

Many thanks,

Chris

Re: Importing UK Motorbike with Aftermarket Modifications

you can ride on your uk plates for 1 year.. no conformity checks are made at the border when you declare the bike.

You need to find out who the importer/distributor is in CH for items you have installed, if its sold here then a certificate is available.

contact the importer, pay approx 60 chf for a certificate and get a garage to stamp it to say the items are fitted properly. take these with you for the MFK when you swap it to swiss plates.

if the FM changes are just software based then dont bother but if you have a power commander etc installed then either remove it for the MFK or get a cert.

i general i have had no issues with different bars or risers.

give us a list of your mods and we may be able to give you an idea of a cert or not

Re: Importing UK Motorbike with Aftermarket Modifications

Shouldn't be any problems at border if the bike is on the list with personal/household goods. Problems could start when you try and register it and get licence plates, they are not happy with non standard items on a bike unless they are approved for use here and there is no logic in what is or isn't approved. Might be worth checking with the local dealer whether it is a major or minor problem. Good luck.

Re: Importing UK Motorbike with Aftermarket Modifications

Thanks for the prompt replies.

The bike has a power commander V and Yoshimura slip on pipe, which is not really road legal in the UK, but there are loop holes here.

It's gonna fail on emissions and noise for sure at about 100dB and with no Cat.

I was hoping to take it in as is and ride it with the dB killer on UK plates before putting it back to OEM spec for Swiss plates as I've got the original Honda exhaust boxed up.

So it sounds like it will pass import ok in its current form.

Can you get Certificates for these bits of performance kit? I'd be surprised.

Thanks again

Chris
