driving to Grenoble

Does anyone know what road conditions ( traffic, not weather obviously ) are likely to be like driving from Genève to Grenoble on a Sunday night?

( one of my brothers may have a business meeting in Grenoble end of this month and of course would be spending some time in GE to see his darling little brother )

Re: driving to Grenoble

I wouldn't expect it to be a major hassle. It depends to some extent on whether you have holiday returns.
You might get some hold-up around Chambéry, as there's no motorway through there. The alternative is to go round the other way on the A43, which I usually use, but it depends on where you want to go in Grenoble. Expect traffic entering Grenoble however.

thanks.. he's actually going to be going to Échiriolles ... which as I understand is just the other side of Grenoble so I guess he should expect a fair bit of traffic getting across town?

Re: driving to Grenoble

I suppose it's going to depend on the weather - if it's been fine with lots of skiers out, I would guess it's going to be rather crowded as they all come back. Might even be worth either arriving early or rather later. If it's bad weather and everyone's in front of their TV sets, probably much easier.
Probably doesn't make a huge difference, but I would suggest using the A43 route. It may be 10 or so km longer, but it's motorway all the way and I would imagine fewer skiers in that direction.

You don't need to go into Grenoble - Turn off the A41 and take the N87 ring road around Grenoble which takes you straight to Échirolles.

Re: driving to Grenoble

A43.. so walk me thru this..
Geneve -Annecy -Albertville and down?

(p.s. -- this is him driving, not me... I intend to be pissed as a fart by the time we see him off... might in fact just put him on a train )

Geneva - Annecy - Aix les Bains, A43 - follow the signs for Lyon - when you get to the A48 follow that to Grenoble.
Other advantage you only have a single péage when you get to Grenoble itself. On the A41 you have two péages, one in Chambéry and another when you get to Grenoble. As to the previous poster, I believe the N87 would be the bit I would suspect gets crowded on bad days.
