Re: Car battery, where? How much?

I ordered mine from Ricardo and it arrived yesterday (about a week after I ordered).

This is the one I bought: http://auto.ricardo.ch/kaufen/fahrze...IsDidYouMean=1

They have more batteries - I think they just go across the border and buy them from Germany when an order comes in, but I'm not sure.

Excellent price, 50chf cheaper than the other site mentioned in this thread, msobatt.

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

Discount was 33% at Coop

So Battery was 99chf in the end. I did look at ordering one, but the prices were no any better and buying locally meant it's fixed right away.

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

Just adding another price example: 185 CHF for a 60 Ah car battery at Accu GmbH in Muttenz.

My car was in the garage and the battery was dead in the morning so I didn't have the option to drive around looking for the best price. Walked to Accu and bought the 60 Ah battery for 185 CHF. The shop specializes on batteries for cars, motorbikes, ebikes, wheelchairs etc. A nice bonus is that they open at 7:30 in the morning, so I was able to pop the new battery in the car and get to work.

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

Not the cheapest, but I bought an excellent Banner battery at ATU in Weil am Rhein. 45 Ah battery cost was CHF 105,-- (I think it was €79)

It was a Saturday so ATU were very busy and couldn't fit it, so I drove to the big supermarket Rhein Center and changed it there in a quiet place at the top of the car park. I then took the old battery back to ATU and claimed back the €5 recycling bonus.

There are 3 things to watch out for when buying a battery,
1) Capacity? Ampère hours Ah, the voltage / Current specification is listed in the car handbook.
2) does the battery require a "foot" for holding the battery in the car?
3) which physical side of the battery are the terminals, the cables do not stretch!

If the OP is in Luzerne it is 250kms round trip to Konstanz so even if they are running a gas guzzler its not a full tank. My car takes around 100CHF to fill and is good for 1000kms so 25CHF - 40CHF maximum cost to drive there
Plus additional servicing
Plus tyre wear
Plus depreciation
Plus plus plus.
Costs more than just fuel to run a car you know. Nearer CHF 100 for the round trip. But possibly still cheaper!

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

http://www.adam-touring.ch/filialen is another place which will sell and install batteries - all in. It's not much more than Migros Do It for a comparable battery, but without installation.

Price we're quoted 260chf, for a battery generally available uk / de online for approx 100chf. Seems hard to better that price for batteries (CH & non internet) aside from the limited range stocked by Landi for example.

If you need it on the day, they know they have you over a barrel.

I get my bike batteries there, car stuff usually at Migros, as those I need NOW, and can't wait a few days.

I think that Landi covers the main battery sizes that most standard cars would need. And the prices seem to be the best I have seen.

44Ah CHF 69
55Ah CHF 79
66Ah CHF 99
74Ah CHF 109
100Ah CHF 139

Ok, well, not my required size, but I guess I don't know about most cars.
Yes, fair prices.

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

If it cannot be in Germany, I'd advice online purchase, I remember I bought a battery (cannot remember size exactly) for my Laguna for ~100chf (not a small battery as it was a diesel) it was half price vs coop own brand...

Yeah, however it's likely to be something needed at short notice for many people.

If you do see the death of a battery coming however, there's a guy on Ricardo (based in Zrh) who seemed to import them from Germany and sell on here. Was best "CH" online price in my case.

I might get a cigarette lighter voltage reader for my car (saw on amazon), that way I'll get a warning of future problems.

They usually die after topping up with distilled water.

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

Most of the posts above talk about places in Germany. Any tips for Geneva/neighbouring France?

Yesterday my car refused to start and we had to push-start it. However this morning it did start. Using a battery tester I just bought from Lidl I found that the battery seems to be flaky. At least the alternator seems to be okay. The bad news is that I bought the battery from TCS 3 years and one month ago so the warranty just expired (how convenient).

I'm thinking of buying the Landi battery for 109 francs and having it installed at a garage, if they're willing to do that.

My car (Opel Zafira A) doesn't have stop-and-start so it shouldn't be too demanding on the battery. I don't know why this one has lasted such a short time (first one went for 10 years!).

Migros Do It + Garden (La Praille and Chêne Bourg) have batteries on sale this week, #1 son has just bought a top of the range one for his Mini and paided ~the same price as the cheapest one would be normally.

You may have had a condensation problem in your alternator or somewhere else. That's often confused for a battery problem because a jump start off another running car will be enough current to overcome the condensation. So maybe your battery is still good. On the other hand, it's not unheard of for a battery to go bad after three years depending on how many times it deep-discharged, how long it sat without use, and environmental conditions. My old diesel volvo is really hard on batteries, as are most diesels.

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

You could try here, most French supermarkets keep a stock of batteries, of course you will have to ft it yourself.

E.Leclerc Ferneydis
Route de Meyrin, 01210 Ferney-Voltaire, France ‎

Or on the other side of Genf you have 3 Speedy Tyres, they will also fit and supply your battery

AUTO CENTRE SPEEDY AMBILLY
58, Route De Genève
74100 Ambilly

AUTO CENTRE ANNEMASSE SPEEDY
46, Route De Thonon
74100 Annemasse

Thonon Les Bains
68 Avenue Du General De Gaulle
74200 Thonon-les-Bains

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

I didn't realize that I was the OP on this thread until just now. So I thought I'd offer a follow up. After my initial post, I followed one of the suggestions and went to the coop where they were on sale. For my Volvo diesel the sale price was 199.- for a 74ah monster with a two year guarantee. Still not a great price. But it was the best I could find without leaving the country, which I didn't have time to do.

So, like I said, it's not unheard of for a battery to only last three years. And here I am three years later and I just replaced it again. I'm tempted to say "you get what you pay for" because it's usually true. But in this case I still feel ripped off even after a 30% price reduction. Bottom line, batteries in Switzerland are a cash crop. And I can only assume, like tires, wipers and oil changes, that mechanics need a 300% mark up on consumables because modern cars don't have enough mechanical problems to keep them in business, not with such a strict MFK that takes older cars off the road.

With this in mind, I'd recommend not going with a cheap coop battery for 199.- when you could get a better one for 239.- or whatever. The additional cost is worth it, even if the overall cost is highway robbery. I didn't try the landi battery so maybe that's an exception, but it's doubtful.

Lately I've been patronizing a local battery shop called Bucholz-Batterie in Luzern (Kriens) right behind the Ford dealership near the train station. I got a 74ah for my volvo and another for my pickup each for 239.- with a three year guarantee. I also got a decent price on a 6v motorcycle battery there, and the guy is real nice so there's also that support your local business feeling.

The problem remains, aside from price, supposedly there are good cells and better cells but how in the world are we supposed to know?

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

I took the car out again today and I had no problem starting the car, so it might be indeed a condensation problem. I'll keep my eyes open.

As to branding, Landi batteries are made by Varta (as are Carrefour's in France).

BTW I paid CHF264 for my battery in 2011, installation included.
