Was just wondering if anyone knows what's happening on the S-Bahn system tonight? I went up to Zürich HB to catch the 19:07 S5 out to Steinmaur and found that it is cancelled. Lots of other trains cancelled and delayed too. Place is chaos. Any ideas?
We take the Swiss trains for granted so much. It really hurts when something like this happens!
Roughly:-
Quote:
Some kind of accident on the Zurich Stadelhofen - Stettbach line. Some trains shall be diverted via Zurich Oerlikon and kept in Zurich Oerlikon. In urban areas in Zurich there will be delays of 10 to 20 minutes. The duration of the disturbance is uncertain.
When I arrived at platforms 21 & 22 it was absolutely hectic. There was no indication as to when the next train was, so I just took a walk up bahnhofstrasse, and then took the tram home.
It usually indicates someone has jumped in front of a train: a sad but all too often occurance. As soon as I heard it on the train I was on this evening, there was a palpable sense of "Oh, crappy, we all know what they mean..."
not related much but I wonder if anyone could tell me for sure if "einzelbillet" is for only one way or for an area? because it is valid for an hour and I dont need a day ticket when I just go to the nearest migros in 1-2 stops.. do I need to buy a return one?
On the related subject of organised chaos, has anyone else been watching "The Tube" on BBC2? Quite an eye-opener for those (me included) who moan when the trains are disrupted to see just how much high pressure work is going on in the background to try to keep things moving.
Of course, I will still grumble under my breath about the fact that the train I get on the Zug S-Bahn is four minutes late every morning... :-)

Stadelhofen is prime real estate for people being "near the track" i.e. falling onto the track when drunk, jumping onto leaving trains and generally getting themselves run over. You can read about the incidents using the RSS link above.
A bit off topic but apparently there are delays from time to time due to people missing their stop and then pulling the emergency stop lever. A couple of months ago some one did this and when the driver looked back he saw a man in a suit bolting across the tracks. That one caused a delay of three hours. The nation wide average is about 1 per day.
Good habits result from resisting temptation. Now that's a debatable subject...
