I used the search function but there wasn't really a thread that fitted, and I thought a general one might be quite useful (I'm asking about Basel but feel free to add minic cab details etc for other cities so other people can use).

Some of my uni friends are over this weekend and we're going to have a couple of nights out in Basel, I've been looking at the last tram times and they're around 1/1.30am but my friends are the type that need to be dragged away from the dance floor by their hair so its unlikely we'd make those, plus they are determined to wear heels and so aren't very receptive of walking, and it's FREEZING :b

I haven't really done a big late night out yet, soo my questions are:

• How easy is it to find a taxi (we're likely to end up in Bar Rouge, Acqua or Redrocks)?
• How much is it likely to be (we need to get to voltaplatz)?
• Are there any mini cab numbers we can call to order a taxi?
• Lastly not related to taxis... is Acqua a good place to end a night? We like cheesy music so any other club/bar recomendations would be good. I thought FAME might be a good fit but I've been told the crowds are very young (we're 25/26) plus I have no idea where it is.

Tram 1 to Bergfelder platz, Tram 3 to universistat BAR ONO
Tram 3 to Barfusserplatz Café Des Arts
Bar street (all bar one etc etc) then Red Rocks/Paddies
Possibly Acqua
Tram/Taxi home (Last Tram 1.30)

TaXis everywhere, no need to worry and about 25chf.

although i do have to ask have you not seen the hundreds of taxis around on your travels in basel? surely you have been out before during the evening??

Get your timing sorted out and get the bus home.

Though as Rob says, a taxi is easier and faster. They park outside Paddies and Radisson

Personally I would say that Acqua is not really a cheesy music kind of place, it always seems to be "hip" music (mind you it's been yonks since I've been there).

The most popular places are Redrocks and Paddy's for cheesy music IMHO

As for taxi's, you'll easily find one at Barfüsserplatz and Messeplatz but it can be a little more tricky as it gets later near Paddy's and Redrocks although it's less than 5 mins walking to Barfi from either which isn't too bad (unless you're me and refuse to walk anywhere when it's cold and my feet hurt).

Rob, I have seen the taxi's but as I said I have done any really late nights out here yet, I've been out in the evening but not after 1am (I think that counts as night and not evening ) I wasn't sure if they all knocked off for the night at a certain time.

My experience in and around London at very late hours is that hailable cabs are either sparse (so its better to have ordered a mini cab in advance) or sometimes refuse to take groups of drunk people (we're very well behaved but they don't know that!) prefering 2's or at most 3's.

Also having never been in a cab in basel I had no idea of the cost, I feared it would be extremely expensive and as I have UK people over I didn't want them to die of shock and would rather warn them in advance of prices.. but 25CHF actually isn't too bad!

I always read that British youngsters get blind drunk, throw up in the telephone box, collapse in the street outside in their underwear, and get the bus home around 11 am. It is nice to see you are breaking the habits of a lifetime!

People are out of doors past 10:00pm?

Honestly, I had no idea that there was that much nightlife in Basel.

I'm not saying that won't happen I'm just trying to have the intention of getting home at a respectable time

By well behaved I meant we wouldn't maim a taxi driver I said nothing about consuimg obscene amounts of cocktails and borrowing road signs and other such useful objects.

If you hear about a hijacked tram this weekend, it wasn't us honest!!

A word of advice: do not throw up in the cab. That'll cost you considerably more than CHF25.

Many areas in rural CH have a late bus service run by volunteers. The one around here is great - with the help of Rotary and Lions + public suscription, a good minibus was bought and wo/manned every week-end by local adults to ensure not drink driving takes place and kids get home safely. Great initiative.

Or better yet drive us home themself free of charge in a Bentley? Order us a helicopter transfer from the roof of bar rouge... too much to hope for? *sigh*

That's what we did back in the day before cellphones.

There's engineering works behind the main station; bag yourselves a traffic cone for the appartment now rather than having to ask the cabby to open the trunk on the night, which can curiously cost an extra few CHF.

I have gone back home from parties as late as 3 in the night. You will easily get a cab at any time of the night. More frequent near Messeplatz and Barfusserplatz. Also availabe right outside Paddys. Fair warning Paddys these days have a male to female ratio of 4:1. So the girls should be aware of drunk furiniture humping guys . Hell lot of a fun to watch tho!. Have fun!
